In the upcoming biographical film titled Borg vs. McEnroe, Sverrir Gudnason and Shia LaBeouf will play famous tennis rivals Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe. The two played in 14 official matches from 1978-1981, including nine finals. In these 14 matches, the record is dead even at 7-7, but McEnroe edged Borg in finals with a record of 5-4.
One person who isn’t excited about this film is John McEnroe himself. This movie is backed by a Swedish film studio and directed by Danish filmmaker Janus Metz Pederson. In an interview with Vanity Fair, McEnroe expressed concern about the lack of contact from LaBeouf and the filmmakers.
McEnroe went on to say, “I don’t know if they are planning on doing the whole movie without input or any type of arrangement from me or Bjorn. I haven’t seen anything, and they’ve already started the movie. It doesn’t seem like they are all that interested in talking with me. I don’t know how you can do it without ever meeting me. Maybe you could talk to a few of my friends, I can barely remember what I was like 36 years ago when I was 21 years old. It could be entertaining. If it’s good, it’d be cool. Let’s hope.”
Borg vs. McEnroe is set to be released in fall of 2017.
