The city of champions (how weird is that to say?) hosted UFC 203 this past weekend, as the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland was home to the latest UFC event. This event featured former WWE champion CM Punk making his highly anticipated debut and also the UFC Heavyweight belt on the line. Below are the results of the event.
Heavyweight Title Fight
Defending Champion Stipe Miocic defeats Alistair Overeem in first round KO
Fabrico Werdum defeats Travis Browne by unanimous decision
Mickey Gall defeats CM Punk in first round submission
Jimmie Rivera defeats Urijah Fiber by unanimous decision
Women’s Strawweight Fight
Jessica Andrade defeats Joanne Calderwood by first round submission
Women’s Bantamweight Fight
Bethe Correla defeats Jessica Eye in split decision
Brad Tavares defeats Caio Magalhaes in split decision
Catchweight Fight(158 pounds)
Nik Lentz defeats Michael McBride by second round TKO
Drew Dober defeats Jason Gonzalez by first round knockout
Yancy Medeiros defeats Sean Spencer
All in all, the card definitely was a little underwhelming. CM Punk was disappointing in his debut, lasting just over two minutes to Mickey Gall, who only had two fights under his belt in his career. Many believed Overeem (41-15, 6-4 UFC) would be a challenge to defending champion Miocic (16-2, 10-2), but that simply wasn’t the case. Fans who bought UFC tickets or the PPV may have felt ripped off, since two of the more hyped up events didn’t make it through the first round. It will be interesting to see how Overeem comes back after this disappointing loss, as well as how CM Punk handles his next fight after quickly learning the octagon is nothing like the ring.
