Arizona Coyotes Overview

Arizona Coyotes Franchise History

The Arizona Coyotes are one of the newer teams in the NHL if you were just looking at names alone, but the fact of the matter is that this howling bunch of hockey players has been on the ice since 1972. The franchise ruled the rink during that time as the Winnipeg Jets before the organization officially made its move south to Phoenix 24 years after its inception. The Coyotes didn't wait to long to celebrate their new nickname with a playoff spot, as the club bowed out in the Conference Quarterfinals in an exciting seven-game set against the Mighty Ducks.

In fact, Phoenix would keep the consistency going by rolling into the playoffs four of their first five years in the city, but unfortunately those pesky quarterfinals stopped the Coyotes each time. Little did Phoenix fans know that they'd be longing for those Conference Quarterfinals losses when the squad went through a brutal six-season stretch where they couldn't muster up enough to get into the post-season ranks.

The Coyotes would make their triumphant return after that difficult little stretch and square off with Hockeytown's own Detroit Red Wings in yet another quarterfinal clash. However, the story was the same for Phoenix as another seven-game stanza didn't produce advancement into the next round. The Red Wings didn't even need seven games the following season to oust the Coyotes, as instead, Detroit simply brought out the brooms to the Phoenix hockey stars.

Luckily, the Coyotes would make the most of their next opportunity in the chase for a Stanley Cup title, as the organization was finally able to get the quarterfinal monkey off their backs and move forward in 2012. The Chicago Blackhawks became the victim of that honor, and then Phoenix kept the momentum rolling along by downing the Nashville Predators in the semis. Phoenix fans didn't know what to do as the Coyotes were then only a single playoff series away from chasing Stanley Cup glory.

Did the Coyotes make it happen? Unfortunately for the rowdy Arizona hockey supporters, they did not and went spiraling down in five games at the hands of the red hot Los Angeles Kings. It was the closest the Coyotes had come to making a real mark on the professional hockey world, but it just wasn't meant to be for Phoenix. After a couple of more years without the playoffs, the Phoenix Coyotes transitioned into the Arizona Coyotes before the fresh new 2014 season got underway.

Arizona Coyotes Marquee Players

Seven players have earned the fabulous distinction of having their number honored by the Coyotes franchise, and there have been a ton of awesome players in addition to that group of talents.

Dale Hawerchuk would have to be at the top of that outstanding list for most Arizona fans since he does have his number honored and is also the franchise leader in points scored. Of course, all of those took place during the club's time in Winnipeg, but it definitely made an impact on the franchise going forward.

But there's a good chance that a current Coyotes great could eclipse his number, as Shane Doan has been doing work on the ice for Arizona for quite a while and appears to be heading towards the top of the scoring list for the organization.

Other Coyotes greats include Bobby Hull and Thomas Steen, who both were technically greats for the Winnipeg franchise when it was located there before the move.

Arizona Coyotes Conference and Stanley Cup Titles

To say that the Arizona trophy case is less than full would be a massive understatement. The Coyotes aren't exactly rolling around in titles since their days as a new franchise, so there's still plenty of work to be done for this Phoenix organization.

No, the Coyotes don't have a single Stanley Cup crown or conference title trophy to their resume, and that has to be rather disappointing for the raucous hockey fans in the city that are wanting more championships on the horizon.

The Coyotes do have one divisional crown, but obviously, that won't wipe away the disappointment of not having the bigger championships on their shelf.

Arizona Coyotes Venue Information

It's the Gila River Arena where the Coyotes try to outlast the competition each night in the NHL, with the Coyotes being the only show in town on a regular basis at the excellent venue. This definitely gives the games a bigger feel since the fans know that the Coyotes are the professional team to watch in this great arena.

Before the move to the Gila River Arena, the American West Arena hosted this wonderful Coyotes franchise for several years until the squad made the move to its new home in 2003.

Just over 17,000 wild and crazy Coyotes fans can take in a game at the Phoenix venue, and you better believe that these great hockey fans bring it when the squad is making its push for a victory. The Gila River Arena has some great features that all hockey fans should take in while in the Phoenix area.

Arizona Coyotes 2014-2015 Season Recap

New name, same problem for this Coyotes franchise that just can't seem to put it all together and make a serious run at a Stanley Cup crown. Arizona tried its best to make an impact on the professional hockey stage, but no playoffs came lurking this time around.

The Coyotes only managed to pick up 56 points on the year, which was just an absolutely dreadful campaign from top to bottom. They finished a lowly seventh in the Pacific Division and were not even close to being considered a title contender, so it was a complete mess overall for a club that was desperately wanting to get back into the title mix.

It marked the third straight campaign that the Arizona hockey supporters didn't witness playoff hockey in their state, and many Coyotes fans have to be getting restless at this point and are hoping that brighter things are on the horizon for this team.
