Arkansas Razorbacks Football Details

The Arkansas Razorbacks are one of the oldest and original teams in the SEC and all of college football and have a great history behind their program. They’ve seen a lot of great players and winning seasons in the past that have made them into a great program. Last season under head coach Bret Bielema, the Razorbacks went a modest 8-5 and came out with a Liberty Bowl victory. But the Razorbacks have their eyes set on something bigger which is winning the SEC and then winning a National Championship.

The Arkansas Razorbacks football program had its beginning in 1894 and had a slow start to the national spotlight until 1915 when the Razorbacks joined the Southwest Conference that featured some of the best college football teams. Throughout this early era from 1915-1957, the Razorbacks saw many head coaches but also formed rivalries with specific college football programs. The Razorbacks made multiple appearances in bowl games and started to establish themselves as a great college football program. Arkansas’ first high profile coach was Frank Broyles who was hired in 1958 and really took the program to another level. Although he had a slow start in his first season, Broyles and the Razorbacks started to dominate from his second season until he left his position in 1976. Broyles led the Razorbacks to their first and only National Championship in 1964. Broyles still has the record for most wins by a Razorback coach with a 144-58 record. Broyles led Arkansas to 10 bowl games, 4 bowl game wins, 7 Southwest Conference wins, and 14 winning seasons. He was voted Coach of the Year in 1964. The Razorbacks had a little bit of success a year after Broyles left but they found their next great coach in Lou Holtz who began in 1977. Holtz coached the Razorback until 1983 and took them to 6 straight bowl game appearances with 3 bowl game wins. Holtz had an overall record of 60-21 with one Southwest Conference Championship before being let go in 1983. The next head coach for the Razorbacks would be a former player who played under Broyles and was on the National Championship team. Ken Hartfield began his coaching tenure in 1984 and coached until 1989. Hartfield led the Razorbacks to a bowl game in each of his 6 seasons only winning one bowl game in 1985. Hartfield had an overall record of 55-17 and won the Southwest Conference twice before resigning to accept the coaching job at Clemson. Following the departure of Hartfield, the Arkansas program struggled and couldn’t continue the success they had built on and couldn’t seem to figure it out until 1998.

In 1998, Houston Nutt was hired to be head coach after coaching at Boise State. By now, the Razorbacks were looking for a solid coach since they were in the SEC. Nutt had a fair amount of success with Arkansas going 75-48 with 7 bowl game appearances and 2 bowl game wins. Nutt was a 2 time SEC Coach of the Year with Arkansas before he resigned in 2007. The next head coach of Arkansas would be Bobby Petrino who would start in 2008 but only coach until 2011. In his short time, Petrino would have success with the Razorbacks going 34-17 with 3 bowl game appearances and 2 bowl game wins. Petrino was let go in 2011 because of issues with the university. John L. Smith was hired as the next coach for Arkansas but went 4-8 in his first season and the university informed him that he would no longer be retained as head coach. Current head coach Bret Bielema would be hired in 2013 after having a great amount of success with the University of Wisconsin. Bielema struggled his first season going 3-9 but has slowly improved each year. In his 3 years, Bielema has led the Razorbacks to 2 bowl games and 2 bowl wins. Bielema’s record of 18-20 doesn’t properly show how much he’s helped improve the program which continues to improve each season. The Razorbacks feel that Bielema is in a great position with the program to lead them to being a favorite in the SEC.

With Arkansas playing in the SEC and having a successful history, a multitude of great players have come through the program that have gone on to be great players in the NFL and some of the best in college football. Some of the great Arkansas Razorbacks are: Darren McFadden, Steve Atwater, Ryan Mallett, Wayne Martin, Lance Alworth, Ahmad Carroll, Steve Cox, Trey Flowers, Knile Davis, Shawn Andrews, and many more. This great SEC program will continually gain some of the best players in the country each season.

With the Arkansas Razorbacks program continually improving under Bret Bielema, they soon could be a power in the SEC. The Razorbacks are in a great position to make moves that will give them the same success and exposure that Arkansas teams of the past have experienced. The Arkansas Razorbacks are on the rise and could be a team to watch out for in the new 2016 season.
