Franchise History

The Atlanta Hawks are a member of the Southeast Division in the NBA's Eastern Conference. The team's roots date all the way back to 1946 in which the franchise operated as the Tri-Cities Blackhawks. In 1949, the Blackhawks were one of the original 17 teams selected to form the National Basketball Association (NBA) after the union of the National Basketball League (NBL) and the Basketball Association of America (BAA).

The organization would find compile a 29-35 record and secure a playoff appearance in its first NBA season under the leadership of Hall of Fame head coach Red Auerbach, who would coach only one season with the Blackhawks before going on to win nine NBA championships as coach of the Boston Celtics.

After its first two NBA seasons, the Blackhawks would then relocate to become the Milwaukee Hawks. The team didn't see much in the way of success after relocating, which caused them to move once again in 1954 and become the St. Louis Hawks.

The Hawks’ luck would soon turn around due to the emergence of power forward Bob Pettit, who was drafted by the team in 1954. Pettit helped the Hawks become one of the most successful teams in the league during the stretch from when he was drafted until he retired in 1965. Pettit helped lead the Hawks to an NBA championship in 1958, which is still the team's only league title to date. He also racked up NBA Most Valuable Player honors in 1956 and 1959 and had a whopping 11 appearances in the league's All Star Game. Pettit is one of only three players to have his number (No. 9) retired by the Hawks organization.

Although the team was seeing plenty of success on the court, financial and arena concerns would lead to the Hawks moving yet again. Owner Ben Kerner would sell the team in 1968, and thus, the Atlanta Hawks were officially born.

Turner Broadcasting owner Ted Turner would take over ownership of the team in 1977 and Time Warner Cable would eventually sell the Hawks to Atlanta Spirit LLC in 2004.

On April 23, 2015, the team was sold to an Anthony Ressler-led ownership group for a whopping $850 million.

Marquee Players

The aforementioned Pettit was the prime catalyst in helping the Hawks earn an NBA championship and become a dominant force in the league throughout the 60s.

Lou Hudson also became a force for the Hawks after being drafted with the fourth overall pick in the 1966 NBA draft. Hudson would go on to play 11 years with the team and would eventually have his No. 23 retired by the organization.

Hall of Fame players Pete Maravich, Walt Bellamy, Connie Hawkins, and head coach Lenny Wilkens would also spend time in Atlanta throughout their incredible careers.

Of course, the most recognizable Atlanta Hawk throughout the team's history is Hall-of-Famer Dominique Wilkins. The former University of Georgia standout would capture numerous NBA awards and go on to have entertaining battles with the likes of Michael Jordan and Larry Bird during the late 80s and early 90s before exiting Atlanta in 1994.

Conference and NBA Titles

The Pettit-led team captured the Hawks only NBA championship to date in 1958 after defeating the Boston Celtics in six games.

However, the Hawks have multiple conference titles to their credit. Then a part of the NBA's Western Conference, Pettit helped the team score conference titles in 1957, 1958, 1960, and 1961.

The Hawks have also won five division titles (1970, 1980, 1987, 1994, and 2015).

Venue Information

Since 1999, the Hawks have played their home games at the Phillips Arena in downtown Atlanta, which is also home to the WNBA's Atlanta Dream.

Phillips Arena seats 18,047 for Hawks' games and has a bit of a unique layout. Instead of dedicating all four sides of the arena for general admission, the arena has one side made up of only luxury boxes and club-level seats.

The arena also introduced see-through shot clocks in 2007 to prevent fans from having their vision blocked while watching the game.

Phillips Arena is also conveniently located near the CNN Center and other great establishments in the downtown Atlanta area.

2014-2015 Season Recap

Atlanta was not figured to factor into the Eastern Conference race during the 2014-2015 regular season, but wildly exceeded expectations after finishing the year with a 60-22 record. It was the team's first 60-win season in franchise history and only the second 50-plus win season since 1998.

Balance was the name of the game for the Hawks throughout the season, as the combination of point guard Jeff Teague, shooting guard Kyle Korver, small forward DeMarre Carroll, power forward Paul Millsap, and center Al Horford took the league by storm.

Of course, it was the team's 19-game winning streak from late December to early February that really captured everyone's attention and made the Hawks an instant title contender.

Thanks to such a dominant second half of the season, Atlanta would run away with the Southeast Divison crown in topping second place Washington by 14 games and seize the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs.

2015 Playoff Outlook The Hawks entered the 2015 NBA playoffs as the East's top seed, with Vegas oddmakers declaring them the fourth overall favorite to the win the league title behind the Cleveland Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors, and San Antonio Spurs. The team will be looking to put its past playoff voodoo behind it as Atlanta has never made an appearance in the Eastern Conference Finals.

Atlanta plays the eighth-seeded Brooklyn Nets in the first round, and should it advance, would go on to meet the Toronto Raptors or division rival Washington Wizards in the second round.

Should the Hawks advance all the way to the 2015 NBA finals, they would receive home-court advantage unless matched up against the Warriors.
