Beyoncé Bio

Beyoncé Knowles Carter is more than an international pop sensation. She’s a true artist, a businesswoman, and even a feminist icon. The R&B singer and pop superstar has built a legion of dedicated fans by putting out consistently excellent material for the better part of two decades, and she is now one of the world's richest, most recognized, and most influential musicians. Getting to this point wasn’t easy for Beyoncé: she rose from a humble background to international fame, and managed to stay in the spotlight while breaking out of her pop-starlet pigeonhole and leaving behind the girl group that made her famous.

For Beyoncé, who first began singing at a very young age, the story starts in Texas. Beyoncé Giselle Knowles was born in 1981 in Houston, Texas. She wasn’t born into wealth: her mother was a hairdresser and her father was a sales manager for Xerox. Beyoncé got her unique name from her mother, whose maiden name was Beyoncé.

It didn’t take long for young Beyoncé to discover her natural talents. While still in elementary school, Beyoncé began attending dance classes. At the age of seven, she entered her school’s talent show and performed John Lennon’s famous song “Imagine.” The judges saw her talent right away, and Beyoncé took home first prize. She beat children twice her age to take first place.

When she was just eight years old, Beyoncé auditioned for a girl group. The audition’s organizers assembled a 6-member group that included Beyoncé and two of the girls who would be her longtime collaborators: her childhood friend Kelly Rowland, and new acquaintance LaTavia Roberson. Called Girl’s Tyme, this group was the earliest form of Destiny’s Child, the group that would make Beyoncé famous.

Girl’s Tyme got their first break when they were invited to compete on the TV show Star Search. Though the girls didn’t win, they were clearly destined for greatness. Beyoncé’s father saw the promise they had and soon resigned from his job to manage the group. In the first of a series of big decisions he made as manager, he cut the group’s lineup down to four members. The group signed with Grass Roots Entertainment and later with Columbia Records.

It was a promising period for Beyoncé’s music, but these years also saw turmoil in Beyoncé’s personal life: forced to live on one income while her father managed the band, her parents grew apart and eventually separated before the band got signed.

In 1996, Girl’s Tyme changed their name to Destiny’s Child. With their new deal with Columbia records, they were on their way. 1997 saw the release of “Killing Time,” their debut song, which was featured on the soundtrack of the film Men in Black. They released their debut album the next year. Destiny’s Child (1998) sold relatively well and earned the group awards and nominations, but it was their sophomore effort, 1999’s The Writing’s on the Wall, that would cement their place as superstars.

The Writing’s on the Wall included mega-hits like “Jumpin’ Jumpin’” and “Say My Name.” But with the group’s new fame came new problems. The band lost two members, LeToya Luckett and LaTavia Roberson, in a dispute over Beyoncé’s father’s management style. They were replaced by Farrah Franklin and Michelle Williams, though Franklin was soon dismissed herself. Destiny’s Child was down to three members. Beyoncé, depressed, blamed the media for the turmoil in the group.

The release of Destiny’s Child’s third album, Survivor, was marred by lawsuits from former members. But the album’s success was what would be remembered: it debuted at number one and featured hits like “Bootylicious.”

By the early 2000s, though, Beyoncé was already starting to outgrow Destiny’s Child. She appeared on-screen as Foxxy Cleopatra in Austin Powers in Goldmember, and she began to record solo tracks. She appeared on Jay-Z’s “’03 Bonnie & Clyde” in 2002, and by 2003 she had a full solo record out: Dangerously in Love, which topped the charts upon its release. The lead single, “Crazy in Love,” featured Beyoncé’s future husband Jay-Z.

Beyoncé toured as a solo act for the first time, giving fans their first chance to buy Beyoncé tickets. A member of a group for years, Beyoncé was finally a solo force.

Beyoncé followed up her hit debut with another number one album, B’Day. The record’s release coincided with Beyoncé’s real birthday. She was just 25 years old. Beyoncé was on top of the world and still in the prime of her career.

2008 was a great year for Beyoncé professionally and personally. She married rap superstar Jay-Z and released her third album, I Am… Sasha Fierce. The new record featured the hit single “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” and made use a new alter ego, Sasha Fierce. Anyone who had ever bought Beyoncé tickets had long understood that her work was multi-faceted, but with Sasha Fierce the singer could literally adopt a second persona.

In 2010, Beyoncé took a nine-month break from music to spend some time with herself and her family. During this time, she parted ways with her father as a business partner. But she returned in style with 4, her fourth album and her fourth consecutive number one record.

Beyoncé’s return to music wasn’t the only good thing in her life in the early 2010s. The singer also gave birth to her daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, in 2012. Just five months later, she was back on stage – and a year later, she was headlining the Super Bowl Halftime Show. In 2013, the same year as her halftime show performance, Beyoncé dropped her fifth album. She released the self-titled record on iTunes with no warning, but fans responded quickly, snapping up copies of the album as quickly as they bought Beyoncé tickets for her coming tour. The album debuted at number one, the fifth time in five tries that Beyoncé had accomplished that feat. No woman in history has ever done that before.

Beyoncé is arguably pop’s most important superstar, and she’s at the height of her powers. She’s put out five consecutive number one albums and has countless fans all around the world. For fans, the only question is: what’s next?
