Billy Currington Details
Billy Currington Bio and Ticket InformationWilliam Matthew “Billy” Currington is an American country music artist. Billy Currington was born on November 19th, 1973 in Savannah, Georgia. Along with four sisters and two brothers, Currington was raised in Rincon, Georgia by his mother and stepfather. Memories from Currington’s sometimes turbulent childhood have been the inspiration for many of his songs, including his first hit single, ‘Walk A Little Straighter,” about his stepfather.
During his high school years, Currington participated in many singing auditions, hoping to land a job in the country music capital, Nashville, Tennessee. Despite having no luck with auditions, he moved to Tennessee following his high school graduation to pursue a career in music. Currington spent a few months in Nashville, but after experiencing a disappointment with his first job, he soon returned home to Georgia. Back in Rincon, he landed a gig singing at a bar. Determined to realize his dreams, Currington gave Nashville another shot. He began juggling several jobs, including one as a personal trainer and another working for a construction company.
Although he had little free time to work on his music, Currington’s job as a personal trainer, ironically, became his ticket to success. He formed a friendship with one of his clients, who worked as a publisher in the music industry. This led him to begin songwriting and recording his own demo tapes. Currington started working with performing artist Mark Wills, who helped to get him in contact with producer Carson Chamberlain. As a result of this, Currington soon landed a recording contract with Mercury Records, a partnership of Universal Music Group Nashville.
Currington launched his career in 2003 with the release of his debut single “Walk a Little Straighter”. Billy had actually written the chorus of the heartfelt song at the tender age of twelve, in response to his stepfather’s alcoholism. The tear-jerking single tells the story of his childhood struggles and the pain he experienced growing up with an abusive, alcoholic parent. Currington instantly earned recognition throughout the country music world as the single climbed the charts, skyrocketing to the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs list.
Following the success of the single, Currington then released his self-titled album in 2003. The album reached No. 17 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart. “I Got A Feelin’ ” became Currington’s second single from the album. This second single ranked even higher than his first, making the Top 5 on the Billboard Country Music charts. With his huge burst of newfound fame and success, Currington scored a collaboration with super-star country singer Shania Twain. Currington partnered with Twain on her single “Party For Two” in 2004. Within only a year since the release of his first single, soon “Party For Two” became Currington’s third Top 10 hit. The collaboration also earned Twain and Currington a nomination for the CMT Music Award for Collaborative Video of the Year.
The following year, Currington released his second album Doin’ Somethin’ Right . The album soared to No. 2 on the Top Country Albums chart and at peaked at No. 11 on the Billboard 200. The album also produced his first two No. 1 hit singles, “Must Be Doin’ Somethin’ Right” and “Good Directions” . The song “Must Be Doin’ Somethin’ Right” won Currington his first music award, the CMT Music Award for Hottest Video of the Year. In addition to the award, the album was so highly successful that it became officially certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), as well.
After this wave of triumphant accomplishments, Currington took a brief absence from the country music scene to write music and return to his roots. He later released the single “Don’t” in 2008. The song became the first single from his third studio album, Little Bit of Everything. The second single from the album, named "People Are Crazy" , soon became his third No. 1 hit and was also nominated for a Grammy. The release of Little Bit of Everything was a huge success, reaching No. 2 on the Billboard Country Music charts. In 2009, Currington joined mega-band Sugarland for their Love on the Inside Tour. Currington performed as the opening act for the tour along with country music stars Jake Owen, Matt Nathanson and Eric Hutchinson.
Currington’s tenth solo single, "Pretty Good at Drinkin' Beer," was announced as the first single from his fourth studio album, Enjoy Yourself, which was later released on September 21st, 2010. "Let Me Down Easy" was released as the second single from the album on October 4th, 2010. “Let Me Down Easy” earned Currington another No. 1 hit in 2011. The album also produced two other Top 100 singles, "Love Done Gone" and “Like My Dog”.
Currington released his fifth album, We Are Tonight, on September 17th, 2013. The album was an instant hit, producing two No. 1 singles and quickly selling millions of copies. The first single from the album, "Hey Girl", peaked at No. 1 on the Country Airplay chart in October 2013. “We Are Tonight”, the second single from the album, added another No. 1 hit under Currington’s belt in August of 2014.
In late October of 2014, Currington released the single “Don’t It”. The single was later announced to be featured on his upcoming sixth studio album, Summer Forever. Highly anticipated, Currington’s first album since 2013 is set to be released in June of 2015. Album details, including the album’s full tracklist, were released on April 22nd, 2015.
The album was produced in collaboration with Dann Huff, who has produced for platinum-selling artists such as Taylor Swift and the Rascal Flatts. The upcoming album features all-stars Ashley Gorley, Shane McAnally, Josh Osborne, Cole Swindell, Florida Georgia Line, Cary Barlowe, Shy Carter and Jimmy Robbins as contributing songwriters.
Currington will be promoting and performing songs from the highly-anticipated album on his upcoming tour dates. The tour is set to kick off on April 24th, 2015 in Punta Gorda, Florida. Currington will be playing shows across America throughout the spring and summer, including Las Vegas, Dallas, Phoenix, Detroit, Denver, Chicago and Philadelphia.
