2015: Who Dominated The Billboard Hot 100? (Infographic)

2015 has been quite a year for popular music, with artists like Taylor Swift or Ed Sheeran, ones who are more traditionally associated wiht the term pop doing very well. However, what “pop music” actually is, is something that is constantly changing.  Nothing makes this more evident than taking a look at the this year’s Billboard Hot 100.  Sure there are constant appearances from previously mentioned, but some of this year’s most consistent artists are from less traditional genres.  Whether it’s electronic leaning creators like Major Lazer, or hip hop heavyweights like Drake, this year most POPULAR acts come aren’t what convention would tell you.

We decided to take an in depth look at the Hot 100 in 2015.  5 artists stood out the most, if you haven’t been living under a rock, their names wont surprise you.

*updated 10/8/2015 – Updated to reflect charted totals, the sheet within the lower infographic is up to date as well.
Drake this week has scored 14 simultaneous songs in the hot 100, tying his own record of 14 that he and the Beatles share.

The chart above (showing up to 10/1 – Week 40) shows the path of every song that each of the 5 artists had chart on the hot 100.  The painstaking (but enlightening) work that went into the chart is also included in the infographic at the bottom of the page; in fact it may be an even better & more telling visual representation of the song trends; you just need a really big monitor to see it all in that view.

The next graph (showing up to 10/1 – Week 40) shows the way Drake’s songs individually trend, because there are just so many. Features are shown as dotted teal lines, Blue represents the random solo song’s Drake has released recently, Black lines are for his If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late project, and the recent spike of purple is his collaboration with Future What A Time To Be Alive.  In total, with features, Drake has charted 28 songs in 2015.

Taking a look at the data/excel file to see just how deep the info goes (reflects week 41 10/8).
Additionally, the two artist who most dominated the top of the chart this year (especially in the second half) and who share a lot in common stylistically are Fetty Wap & The Weeknd.  We decided to focus on the two for their own section.
