It is no secret that that basketball, the game that was “born in America,” is immensely popular in other parts of the world, particularly Europe. It is in the countries on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean where players develop their skills in professional basketball leagues, skills that turn them into prime prospects for the National Basketball Association (NBA).
Eastern European countries like Lithuania and Croatia have done a good job developing players for America’s professional league. The same is true for Turkey. That is where Egemen Guven, a nineteen year old Power Forward who stands 6’11” tall and weighs two hundred twenty pounds, plays the kind of basketball that has scouts in America excited.
This young Turkish citizen has been playing basketball at a high level since he was just sixteen years old. That was just three years ago in 2012. In that year, Guven performed for the Turkish national U16 Team (Under 16 year old squad) and helped that team win the European Championship.
He has been an integral part of Turkey’s U18 team, as well. In fact, with his on-floor performances, as well as those from teammates, this group of players under age 18 has won two consecutive championships, in 2013 and in 2014. And Egemen Guvan has been a principal contributor for each squad.
In 2015, Egemen Guvan was so good, in fact, that he was named to the All-Tournament team and, more impressively, was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament.
As might be expected, scouts for America’s NBA teams who were already aware of Guven, are now really energized. He is projected by them to be a high first round draft pick in the next NBA Draft in the summer of 2016.
Scouts like the fact that he has an all-around game. Although he is now only nineteen years old, he has exceptional shooting ability from mid-range to beyond the three-point line. Egemen Guvan also runs the floor well which means he can capitalize on fast break opportunities and still get back to defend when the opposing team is on offense.
Importantly, Egemen Guven is an excellent rebounder and a tireless defender. Add it all up, as American scouts have done, and this young player has a very promising future.
Of course, Guven needs to add weight and muscle to help him withstand the close-up battles that are so much a part of play in the National Basketball Association. But the bulk his body needs should come naturally. He is still just a teenager and is continuing to grow and build his body.
There seems to be little, if any, doubt that Egemen Guven will be a player to watch when his NBA career finally begins next year. The question now is: which team will be lucky enough to draft him?
