It isn’t often that a college basketball program like the one at Mississippi State University is able to land a true “Five Star Prospect,” especially when other suitors include such schools as the University of Kentucky, Louisiana State University (LSU) and the University of Kansas.
Those three schools run top level basketball programs and generally have little trouble attracting and signing the best high school athletes. But there are no absolutes in life or in college basketball. So this year, Malik Newman, arguably the best basketball player ever to come out of Mississippi, decided to stay close to home and selected Mississippi State University as his personal basketball team of choice.
New Head Coach Ben Howland is naturally thrilled to land a future star of this magnitude as are the loyal fans of Mississippi State’s basketball team.
This young 6’3” one hundred seventy five pound Point Guard has been cited by 247Sports as the eighth best prospect in 2015, the kind of player who generally accepts scholarships from top schools like the University of Kentucky.
Newman has received countless accolades for his exploits on the hardwood and was a prolific scorer and great team leader in his four year high school career. In fact, he is the only player in the history of the state of Mississippi to win four consecutive state championships. His leadership on the floor and his athletic ability and skills were the primary reasons why Callaway High School in Jackson, Mississippi enjoyed so much success.
Malik Newman continued his stellar play after high school and prior to the beginning of his college career which will start just a few weeks from now. This young and very talented superstar has been a two-time Gold Medalist and has earned a Most Valuable Player (MVP) award as a member of the United States U18 (under age 18) National Team.
Now, at the dawn of his freshman season as a college basketball player, Malik Newman will join other recruited players such as 4 Star-rated Shooting Guard Quinndaiy Weatherspoon, 3 Star Power Forward Joseph Strugg and 3 Star Juco (Junior College) Power Forward Ray Kasago.
This talent-laden 2015 recruiting class will unite with several returning players to make Mississippi State University a force to be reckoned with in the powerful Southeastern Conference (SEC). This team will almost certainly compete for Conference honors and appears to be a certain participant in the “March Madness” tournament.
If all players perform to expectations, this squad from the South may get to play “deep” into the national tournament. perhaps all the way to “Sweet Sixteen” weekend or even beyond that.
A new Head Coach, a great recruiting class, capable returning players all add up to the promise of success for this developing squad which will rely heavily on Malik Newman. However, professional scouts have rated so Newman so highly, that her may spend only one season in college.
The instant wealth available to star players like Malik Newman by teams in the National Basketball Association (NBA) is often a lure that is too hard to pass up.
