The beloved DIY venue in Brooklyn, 285 Kent, is shutting down in the coming weeks. This closing comes with the crackdown on NYC’s “unofficial” music venues, which essentially represent what’s left of the NY underground. DIY concerts exist on the edge of legality, and they’re becoming increasingly rare give the gentrification of the neighborhoods they’re a part of. 285 Kent (located in Williamsburg), was recently raided by the NYPD, and faced pressure to close it’s doors. It appears that the owners have finally given in, but not without one last hurrah. Some pretty noteworthy acts will be playing the “farewell shows,” starting this weekend.
