Artists to Watch – Rose Windows

There are bands who appear like carbon copies of their predecessors, skating by in the music industry with nothing more than a lack of originality. Then there are the bands whose sound stops you in your tracks. For the hundreds of college radio DJs nationwide, Rose Windows are one of those bands.

Rose Windows are enjoying airplay on many college radio stations, as evidenced by their appearance on CMJ’s top 20 for the week of July 30. Led by singer Rabia Shaheen Qazi, whose voice is reminiscent of Jefferson Airplane’s Grace Slick’s, the band is a consistent presence on the college music charts.

Self-described as “insufferable psychedelic garbage,” the band seems to have gotten only one word correct within that depiction: “psychedelic.” The band is clearly influenced by some of the melody-makers of the ‘60s, namely those who frequently used organs and keyboards. However, Rose Windows’ new album, “The Sun Dogs,” isn’t intolerable; rather, it’s more like a gift from an occasionally-repetitive music industry.

According to Rose Windows’ Facebook page, the band was “born” in Seattle in November 2010 from the mind of lead guitarist/composer Chris Chevyo. The band is comprised of seven musicians, mainly led by a female lead vocalist accompanied by two male singers. “The Sun Dogs,” released by Sub Pop in June, makes for an exciting debut, creating anticipation for the band’s future offerings. Each song contains its own sort of beauty and harbors the ability to take the listener on a serene journey. Standouts include “The Sun Dogs I: Spirit Modules,” which sounds almost like a rock take on a Native American instrumental, and “Wartime Lovers,” a song whose airy instrumentals goes hand-in-hand with singer Qazi’s smooth vocals.

Rose Windows will perform at 19 venues beginning August 24. Try to catch them when they’re in your neck of the woods; it just may be this year’s most unique concert-going experience.
