Austin City Limits Returns For a Second Week
Austin City Limits Music Festival is packed this year with artists such as Kings Of Leon, Depeche Mode, Muse, The Cure, and Phoenix, to name just a few. ACL is taking place in Austin’s Zilker Park where, annually, more than 130 artists perform to ecstatic fans. Originally, Austin City Limits was only one weekend a year but the extraordinary popularity of ACL has created the impetus for the festival to now cover two weekends.
Having two weekends for ACL allows even more music fans to revel in the sonic smorgasbord. The eight venue zones for rocking out are Lady Bird, Honda, Austin Ventures, BMI, Zilker Tent, Bud Light, Samsung Galaxy, and Austin Kiddie Limits. As always, there is plenty to see.
This year fans are enjoying two bands that have been around for more than thirty years each, Depeche Mode and The Cure. The Cure are blowing away fans with classics like “Boys Don’t Cry” and “Friday I’m In Love.” Depeche Mode satisfies long time fans with past hits “Personal Jesus,” and “Just Can’t Get Enough.” Also, look out for Queens of the Stone Age, a band not nearly as old, but they’re recently returning with …LIKE CLOCKWORK after an absence since their last album in 2007. They’ve been rocking crowds on tour, though, proving that they haven’t lost a step in their time out of the spotlight.
ACL has enough of-the-moment top artists and indie darlings to boggle the mind. Kings Of Leon, Phoenix, Vampire Weekend, Passion Pit, Kendrick Lamar and many more are in the incredible line up. Kings Of Leon will play past favorites like, “Crawl” and “Radioactive,” and new songs like “Supersoaker.” Although, Kendrick Lamar is the only rapper playing ACL this year, he exhilarates the crowd with songs like “Money Trees” and Poetic Justice.” Phoenix always energizes fans and gives them a fun, heartfelt set. Don’t miss festival staples Vampire Weekend and Passion Pit, both playing old favorites as well as new songs with gusto.
What else is going on at Austin City Limits?
-Late Night Shows – at venues like Emo’s, Antone’s, and Stubb’s Indoors; those who aren’t ready to go home for the night can get an extra dose of indie music.
– Austin Eats – There will be local restaurants offering a plethora of options and, this is Austin, of course, so there will be vegetarian and gluten-free options. Check out local favorites Stubbs Bar-B-Q, The Salt Lick, and Amy’s Ice Cream.
– The Art Market – Festival goers can shop booths for clothing, accessories, posters and more by local artisans.
– Austin Kiddie Limits – Kids 10 and under get into ACL free with parents, and there is a lot for them to do. Open from 11a.m. to 4:30p.m. daily are activities to make adults jealous like a hip hop workshop, drumzone, a chance to get rockstar hair-dos, and rockstar video karaoke.
ACL has been around for more than ten years, but it’s parent, the Austin City Limits Television show, is going into its 39th year. Austin City Limits is the longest running music television program ever. The show is an hour long performance by one or more artists and it helped solidify Austin as the “Live Music Capital of the World.” The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum has found the show important enough to digitally preserve all episodes of Austin City Limits from the very first with Willie Nelson in 1974.
Austin City Limits still has the weekend of Oct. 11-13 ahead with amazing artists delivering unbeatable performances again to lucky fans.
