The Best NBA Draft Picks Ever

With the 2014-2015 NBA season finally in the books, the attention now shifts to the draft taking place June 25th. Dozens of new mock drafts are published every day, and there’s endless speculation as to who will go where, so we got to thinking (and arguing) about taking a different look at the history of the NBA Draft.

We scoured through more than 60 past NBA drafts and thousands of selections to come up with a list of the best players drafted at each overall draft position. We took into account MVPs, All-Star appearances, scoring records, and more, but there wasn’t an exact formula, and some picks were certainly easier than others. It’s difficult to argue that there’s been a better number three pick than Michael Jordan, but we had a much more difficult time choosing a number one with names like Magic, Kareem, Shaq, LeBron, Oscar, and Hakeem on the table.

As the league has grown, the draft has expanded, and some of our selections actually took place in the second round of their draft (Dennis Johnson, for example), but we looked at each player in regards to the overall number at which they were taken.

Take a look and see if you agree with our list, and if you don’t, let us know.
