Playlist: The Best Songs of 2014 (So Far)

In the spirit of summer, here’s a look at our favorite songs of the year so far, which coincidentally, make for one kick-ass playlist. Each song gives 2014 a tangible feeling, one that will always take you right back here, no matter how much time has passed. Have a listen to the best tunes that 2014 has to offer.

The Best Songs 0f 2014

The following tracks are in no particular order. Note: these songs are best heard driving to the beach, at a rooftop party, or baking-out your minivan. Whichever way, go forth and start a Rukkus.

The List:

The Orwells – “The Righteous One”

The sound of “not caring” in all its angsty, grungy glory.

Future Islands – “Seasons (Waiting On You)”

Bonus points if you can get the dance down. Everyone at the party will be equally creeped-out / attracted to you.

YG – “Who Do You Love?”

Is YG hip-hop’s king of 2014?

Hamilton Leithauser – “Alexandra”

The Walkmen may be defunct, but man, can Leithauser still write a summer anthem. Play this one on a loop.

Arianna Grande – “Problem”

You’re damn right we like this song. So what. Wanna fight about it?

Madlib / Freddie Gibbs / Danny Brown – “High”

This one speaks for itself. Danny Brown’s verse >.

Real Estate – “April’s Song”

The best driving song of the year.

Dum Dum Girls – “Rimbaud Eyes”

I’m not sure what Rimbaud Eyes are, but they sound freakin’ sexy.

St. Vincent – “I Prefer Your Love”

“St. Vincent Priest Repellent ®” — Just play this song and stay priest-free this summer!

Jungle – “Time”

Jungle is going to be huge. Wait.

The War on Drugs – “Red Eyes”

This one brings me to the same place as Darkness on the Edge of Town—a suburban crossroads in the dead of night at summertime. Let it take you somewhere.

Ought – “Today More Than Any Other Day”

Ought start off slowly, before the wheels fall off into Talking Heads maniacal speed-talking.

Parquet Courts – Instant Disassembly

Pavement once recounted being “so drunk in the August sun”; this plead to an unnamed “mamacita” by Parquet Courts is cut from the same cloth.

Drake – “0 to 100/ The Catch Up”

This one-off has us salivating for Drake’s next record.

Young Thug – “Danny Glover”

This song is a lethal weapon in the club.

DJ Snake feat. Lil Jon – “Turn Down For What”

Things I turn down for: Work. Snacks. Kittens. Picnics. But that’s it!

Chromeo – “Jealous (I Ain’t Wit It)”

I don’t usually dance to self-deprecation, but Chromeo make it so damn easy.

Jack White – “Just One Drink”

Basically, any song on Lazaretto could be on this list. We went with this one.

Mac DeMarco – “Salad Days”

Try to resist singing along to this one. Just try. We dare you. Did you do it? Just try to do it. You won’t. It’s a good song. Just try.

MØ – “Don’t Wanna Dance”

A pop track that deserves way more attention.

BLEACHERS – “I Wanna Get Better”

You can’t dislike this song. The hook is just too good. If you do, then you are lying (and a hipster).

Schoolboy Q – “Man of the Year”

The theme song for egomaniacs everywhere.

Angel Olsen – “High & Wild”

This would sound perfectly at home coming out of a jukebox in a dive bar in Louisiana… I think that’s the point.

Future feat. Pusha T, Pharrell Williams and Casino – “Move That Dope”

Rap song of the year? Verse after verse after verse…

Lana Del Rey – “West Coast”

Like the LDR movement or not, you might as well get used to hearing it, because this song’s going to be everywhere soon.
