#FlashbackFriday: See What Bowling For Soup Have Been Up To; We Talked about Gigging and Warped Tour

We had the chance to catch up with Erik Chandler, the bass player from Bowling For Soup. BFS represents the roots of Warped Tour as they’ve been together for 20 years and attending Warped for over 10 years. We talk about how Warped Tour’s sound has evolved, their relationship with their fans, and more!

 Bowling For Soup Interview

Rukkus: You guys are Warped veterans. How many times have you been out on Warped Tour?

Erik Chandler: We did the whole thing in 2003 and 2004. For the last 10 years since then, we have kind of been on-and-off and doing just bits and pieces.

Have you gotten used to the craziness that is Warped? Or is it still kind of mayhem?

Yes, it’s still mayhem, but we understand how the mayhem works now. So it’s a controlled chaos I guess.

You guys have had so many releases and a bunch of albums, how do you choose a set list when you have such a large discography?

We don’t play with a set list. That being said, we just did a tour in the UK in October of last year where we had to use a set list because we were playing 3 hours every night, and so we just made a set list so that we could remember everything we needed to play. And we recycled that playlist in early June when we did our 20th anniversary show in Dallas. When you’re playing for a long time you’ll forget some things. So writing things down we are starting to realize is a good thing.

The name of your last album (Lunch. Drunk. Love.) was voted on by your fans. Is keeping that relationship with your fans an important part of your identity as a band?

It is extremely important to us now as a band. When we started, we didn’t have the immediacy with interaction with people, but we were some of the first folks to start screaming at our record label saying ‘hey this internet thing, we gotta be on top of this, it’s going to the future of the music industry’ and they were like ‘Oh, no. No, we’re going to do the same things that we always have.’

And we immediately jumped in headfirst and started building our relationship with our fans through social media and it’s very, very important to us. Through that, we’ve made so many friends that are actually close personal friends because we got to know them online, meet them at shows, and then hangout. And now, they come and visit us at our houses and we go and visit them at their houses. It’s very cool for us.

Bowling For Soup are Warped Tour staples.

Do you think you have a certain role in the Warped Tour scene since you guys have been around for a little while?

I hope that we don’t! It’s been really, really amazing the last few years that we’ve done Warped Tour because there isn’t a lot of music on the tour that is like us anymore. And we first started doing it, a lot of things sounded similar to what we were doing and now it’s very heavy.

But having those bands come to you and stand on the side of your stage while you’re playing and meet them afterwards and have them be like ‘oh my god, you guys got me into playing guitar,’ or ‘we started a band because we were listening to you guys.’ It’s just an amazing feeling. It’s a very humbling feeling to think that we possibly influenced many people.

Who are some of the must-see bands this year at Warped?

The must-see, as far as I’m concerned, is Less Than Jake. I mean, they’re good friends but beyond that, everyday when I hear them from across the park, it’s like, ‘Alright! Yeah, here we go!’ That’s just a great feeling to have, to hear something I’ve been with for so very long.

They were one of the first bands that were really kind to us and made such a difference for us. We played a show for a Dallas radio station and this guy comes out to introduce Less Than Jake. And he’s like ‘Alright, everybody let’s hear it for Let’s Go Bowling! And up now is Less Than Jake’ and Chris [Demakes of Less Than Jake] walks up to the mic and immediately is like ‘It’s Bowling For Soup you dumb mother-fucker!’ And we’re all like ‘oh god, oh my god, he knows who we are, he knows the name of our band!’ So from that moment we became really great friends with them. So it’s fantastic to hear them everyday.
