The Red Storm has been to the NIT 30 times. They have won 45 NIT games in their storied history. St. John’s has won the NIT in 1943, 1944, 1965, 1989, and 2003 although the last one was vacated due to NCAA infractions. St. John’s has gone to the NIT Final Four at Madison Square Garden 15 times in their 30 trips.
Some of the greats to play for St. John’s include Mark Jackson, Chris Mullin, Malik Sealey, Walter Berry, Dick McGuire, Ron Artest, Maurice Harkless, JaKarr Sampson, Sir’Dominic Pointer and many more. The Red Storm often play their bigger games at the Madison Square Garden but their on-campus home is the Carnesecca Arena, named for their all-time leader in wins, Coach Lou Carnesecca.
Back in the 1980s, when the Big East ruled college basketball, St. John’s and Coach Carnesecca were one of the best teams in the nation. In the 1980s, St. John’s played in seven NCAA Tournaments, advancing to the 1985 Final Four with two other Big East teams, Georgetown and Villanova.
The Carnesecca Arena opened in 1961 and holds a little over 6000 fans. It is a very intimate setting for such a great college basketball program, which is why many of the Red Storm games are played at the spacious MSG. While you cannot go wrong with a visit to “The World’s Most Famous Arena” whether it is a New York Knicks, St. John’s or New York Rangers game, going to Carnesecca Arena for the Red Storm is one you want to make.
Every seat in the intimate gym is close to the action. The old gym has had a recent overhaul, giving it the new arena feel but also a unique St. John’s only feel. The banners in the rafters belong only to St. John’s. Red is the predominant color and you will know this is the home of the Red Storm as soon as you walk in.
When inside the Carnesecca Arena, you can enjoy all your favorite concession items such as pizza, hot dogs, burgers, popcorn, pretzels, nachos, and Coke products while taking in a great college basketball game. The atmosphere is awesome as the St. John’s fans take their basketball very seriously.
St. John’s is still in the Big East with teams such as Butler, Creighton, DePaul, Georgetown, Marquette, Providence, Seton Hall, Villanova, and Xavier. These are some of the best college basketball teams in the nation. You will be watching teams bound for the NCAA Tournament when you come out to watch St. John’s basketball this season.
Do not miss out on a great college basketball experience at Carnesecca Arena. Bring the family out as often as you can.
