The Providence Friars have been to the NCAA Tournament 17 times in their school history. Five of those times they have reached the Sweet Sixteen and four of those times they went to the Elite Eight. Providence has two appearances in the Final Four (1973 and 1987). The 1987 Final Four appearance was a memorable one because the head coach was a young Rick Pitino and the star player was a point guard named Billy Donovan. You are not much of a college basketball fan if you do not know those two names.
The Friars have been to the NIT 19 times in their history. They won the tournament twice (1961 and 1963) and have been to the seven times. Their overall record at the NIT is 32-20. Some of the all time greats to play for the Friars include Donovan, Lenny Wilkens, Jim Larranaga, Marvin Barnes, Marshon Brooks, Ricardo Ledo and many more.
The Dunkin Donuts Center opened in 1972 and seats over 12,000 fans. It has seen a lot of great basketball over the years with the Friars being part of the Big East Conference for so long. The Big East at one time was the best conference in college basketball with teams like Georgetown, Seton Hall, St. John’s, Villanova, Pitt, UConn and Syracuse always battling for the championship and a high NCAA seed. You can sense the greatness as soon as you walk inside and look up at the banners.
The Big East is now comprised of a lot of great basketball schools such as Butler, Georgetown, Xavier, Creighton, Marquette, DePaul, Seton Hall, Villanova and St. John’s. Look for several of these teams to make it to the Big Dance come March.
You will want to go to as many Friars games as you can this season. Do not miss out on the great Big East basketball action.
