The Cowboys have been to the NIT 11 times, twice making it to the semifinals. The Cowboys have win their conference tournament four times and the conference regular season championship 19 times. Some of the great players to suit up for the Cowboys include Marcus Smart, John Starks, Bryant Reeves, Brooks Thompson, Desmond Mason, John Lucas III, Byron Houston, Markel Brown, Tony Allen and many more.
The Cowboys play their home games at the Gallagher-Iba Arena which opened in 1938 and holds over 13.000 fans. The concessions are outstanding with selections such as bratwursts, pizza, BBQ sandwiches, popcorn, pretzels, Frito pies and Coke products. You can enjoy those from a great seat while you watch some of the best teams in college basketball in what has been called “The Rowdiest Arena in the Country.” The student section is near the court and they keep it rocking in Gallagher-Iba Arena.
The neighborhood surrounding Gallagher-Iba Arena is one you will not be able to resist. Get to the game early and stay late as you visit Willie’s Saloon or if you are hungry, you can go to Hideaway Pizza or to Eskimoe Joe’s for a great burger or sandwich. A unique place to visit near the arena is the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. Oklahoma State is the place for this as the school has won 11 National Championships in the sport.
The Cowboys have been led by two legendary coaches in Henry Iba, who the Arena is co-named and Eddie Sutton who the court is named for. Iba led the team to its two national championships and also the US Olympic teams to two gold medals and a silver medal. Sutton not only won the most games in Cowboys history but also coached the Kentucky Wildcats and Arkansas Razorbacks. He retired with over 800 wins.
The Cowboys are part of the Big 12 Conference which is one of the best in college basketball. The conference includes teams such as Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Texas, Texas Tech, Baylor, TCU, Iowa State and West Virginia. These teams will all be trying to get to the NCAA Tournament by either winning the Big 12 Tournament or by winning enough regular season games to get an at-large bid, which typically about half of them will receive.
When you go to a game at the Gallagher-Iba Arena to watch Oklahoma State take on their Big 12 rivals, you are watching the top level of college basketball in one of its most historic venues. You do not want to miss out on any of the action this season. Bring the whole family out to a Cowboys game this season.
