College Stadium Review: Hawkins Arena

The Mercer Bears have been to the NCAA Tournament three times in school history (1981, 1985 and 2014). Their most recent trip was a memorable one as they eliminated the Duke Blue Devils in one of the biggest upsets in the history of the tournament. Duke then ran the table in the 2015 NCAA Tournament, winning it all for the fifth time. So Mercer is the last team to beat the mighty Blue Devils in the Big Dance.

Mercer has played in the NIT once (2013), the CBI once (2015) and the CIT once (2012). They might be the only team in college basketball to have played in all four postseason tournaments in the past four years. In 2012, they won the CIT Tournament, winning five straight games and beating Utah State in the championship game. Which tournament will the Bears be in this year? They are of course hoping it will be the Big Dance!
The Bears play in the Southern Conference. To get to the NCAA Tournament they will have to win the SoCon Tournament. The other teams in the SoCon include Chattanooga, The Citadel, East Tennessee State, Furman, Samford, UNC Greensboro, VMI, Western Carolina and Wofford. These teams will also be trying to win the regular season crown and the postseason bid that comes with it. So the action on the court at Hawkins Arena will be hot all season.
Hawkins Arena has been the Home of the Bears since 2004. Hawkins holds 3200 Bears fans and everyone enjoys a great view of the court. The Concessions include Chick-Fil-A and Subway sandwiches and Buffalo Chicken Wings from Francar’s.
The fans are really into the games, especially after four straight postseason tournaments. Bears basketball is a hot ticket in Macon, Georgia these days.
