The Virginia Cavaliers have been to the NCAA Tournament 19 times in their storied history. They have advanced to the Sweet Sixteen eight times, the Elite Eight five times (1981, 1983, 1984, 1989 and 1995). The Cavaliers have been to two Final Fours (1981 and 1984).
UVA has also been to the NIT 13 times. They have advanced to Madison Square Garden twice and won the championship both times (1980 and 1992). The Cavs have also been to the CBI once (2008) and advanced to the semifinals.
John Paul Jones Arena opened in 2006 and seats nearly 15,000 fans. The students keep the venue rocking as they cheer on the Cavaliers to victory. While the heyday of Virginia basketball was certainly in the 1980s, the current team is back among the best in the game.
Some of the greats to have played for the Cavaliers include Ralph Sampson, Corey Alexander, Rick Carlisle, Jeff Jones, Olden Polynice, Bryant Stith, Ricky Stokes, Marc Iavaroni and many more. Are the next Cavs NBA stars on this year’s team? There is a great chance of that.
UVS is part of the ACC, which is perhaps the best conference in all of college basketball. Teams such as Duke, North Carolina, NC State, Syracuse, Pittsburgh, Boston College, Virginia Tech, Clemson, Georgia Tech, Florida State, Louisville, Miami, Notre Dame and Wake Forest will be on the Cavs schedule this season, most of them coming to John Paul Jones Arena.
Rivalry games such as Virginia Tech, North Carolina State, UNC and Duke are games you will not want to miss. New rivalries with teams such as Pittsburgh and Syracuse are forming and they will be great for years to come.
These teams will be trying to get to the NCAA Tournament by either winning the prestigious ACC Tournament. The winner gets an automatic bid to the Big Dance. However, these teams will also be trying to win enough games to earn an at-large bid to the Big Dance. The ACC normally sends about half of their teams to the NCAA Tournament and Virginia is likely to be one of them. Come out and see these great teams play the Cavs this season.
You will have a tough time finding a better college basketball experience than at the John Paul Jones Arena for the Cavaliers games this season. UVA is sure to give you your money’s worth as they go for a possible Final Four trip this season. You do not want to miss out on the exciting ACC action at JPJ Arena. Bring the whole family out as often as you can this season.
