The Louisville Cardinals are one of the elite programs in college basketball. They have made the NCAA Tournament field 41 times in their glorious basketball history. They have been to the Sweet Sixteen 28 times, the Elite Eight 14 times, the Final Four 10 times, and won three National Championships, the most recent in 2013.
Some of the great players to play for Louisville include Wes Unseld, Darrell Griffith, Pervis Ellison, Charlie Tyra, Clifford Rozier, Russ Smith, Butch Beard, Junior Bridgeman, Lancaster Gordon, Peyton Silva, Milt Wagner, DeJuan Wheat, Rodney McCray and many more.
Louisville has been involved in some of college basketball’s greatest games including the 1983 Elite Eight win over Kentucky in overtime that rekindled the great rivalry between the two in-state schools. The Final Four contest that followed with Houston was a thrill-a-minute dunk contest between the two fast paced offenses that saw the Cougars win 94-81.
The 1980 National Championship win over UCLA was a memorable one simply because UCLA had never lost a championship game before and had won 23 straight Final Four games before Louisville broke the streak.
With three National Championships, only a handful of teams are ahead of Louisville on the all time list. UCLA, Kentucky, Indiana, North Carolina, Duke, and Connecticut are the only schools with more than Louisville and Kansas is tied with them at three.
Louisville plays their home games at the KFC Yum Center, a new arena that opened in 2010 and holds over 22,000 rabid Cardinals fans. Nowhere do they take college basketball more seriously than in Kentucky, and Louisville is one of the big reasons why.
Inside the KFC Yum Center you will find Papa John’s Taco Bell and of course KFC stands but that is not all. There are over 50 different concession stands inside the arena where you can get anything from a pot roast sandwich or Philly cheesesteak, many different beers and even mixed drinks. You will not find a better selection of food and beverage anywhere in any sports arena.
The KFC Yum Center is an arena any NBA would be proud to call home. The concourse level is as modern and beautiful as any NBA arena. The seats are all comfortable chairs with armrests. The scoreboard over the floor has hi def video screens on all sides. This place might be the best venue in college basketball.
The Cardinals play in the ACC, which is the best conference in college basketball. Duke, North Carolina, Syracuse, Pittsburgh, Wake Forest, Georgia Tech, Florida State, Virginia, Miami, Clemson, Boston College, Notre Dame and Virginia Tech are all part of the ACC and many of those teams will be visiting the KFC Yum Center this season.
This year’s Cardinals home schedule includes North Florida, Kennesaw State, Western Kentucky, UMKC, Wake Forest, Pittsburgh, FSU, Virginia, North Carolina, Boston College, Syracuse, Duke, Georgia Tech and more. With a home schedule like this, you will want to get tickets to as many Cardinals games as you can this season.
KFC Yum Center might be the best place to watch college basketball in the sport. You won’t want to miss out on any of the great ACC action this season!
