The Temple Owls basketball program has a great winning tradition. They have been to the NCAA Tournament 31 times, and of those trips they have been to the Sweet Sixteen seven times, the Elite Eight seven times and the Final Four twice (1956 and 1958). Of the “Big Five” in Philadelphia, Temple may be the biggest of them. Temple is 33-31 all time in the NCAA Tournament.
Temple has been to the NIT 18 times in school history. They are 23-16 all time with two tournament championships (1938 and 1969). They’ve been to the semifinals at Madison Square Garden five times their 18 trips, including last season.
Temple is sixth all time in number of wins in this sport, behind only Kentucky, North Carolina, Duke, Syracuse and Kansas. That is some really special company. Think about some of the names not mentioned on this list: Arizona, UCLA, Indiana, Michigan State, Florida, NC State, UNLV, all are trailing Temple in college basketball games won. So when you come out to see the Owls, you are watching one of the great college basketball programs.
Some of the great players to have come out of Temple include Aaron McKie, Mark Macon, Dionte Christmas, LaVoy Allen, Lynn Greer, Marc Jackson, Ollie Johnson, Pepe Sanchez, Terrance Stansbury and many more.
Temple plays their home games at Liacouras Center, which opened in 1997. Over 10,000 Temple hoops fans pack the place out regularly to root on the Owls. All the seats there are comfortable and have a great view of the court. You can enjoy one of college basketball’s great programs while also enjoying great concession items such as hot dogs, pizzas, boneless wings, and beer! Yes, they have beer at the Owls games!
Temple is part of the American Athletic Conference, which means games against some of college basketball’s best teams such as Cincinnati, Memphis, UConn, UCF, USF, Houston, East Carolina, SMU, Tulane, and Tulsa. There are many NCAA Tournament championships, Final Fours, and Sweet Sixteens among that group of teams, and surely there are many more to come. With those teams coming to the LC, you will want to come out as often as you can to watch the Owls.
The Big Five is kind of a “mini-conference” among schools from Philadelphia. These schools include Temple, Villanova, LaSalle, Pennsylvania and St. Jopseph’s. When these schools get together, the action is quite intense. St. Joseph’s and Villanova will make visits to Liacouras Center this season.
You will want to get out to Temple basketball games at Liacouras Center as often as you can this season. Bring the whole family out to root the Owls on to victory this season. Bring the whole family out, as everyone will have a great time. Temple basketball is one of the AAC’s premier programs. You don’t want to miss out.
