The Vanderbilt Commodores are one of the elite basketball programs in the SEC. They have been to the NCAA Tournament 13 times in school history. They have been to the Sweet Sixteen six times (1965, 1974, 1988, 1993, 2004 and 2007). The Commodores were in the Elite Eight in 1965.
Vanderbilt has also been to the NIT 12 times. They have made it to Madison Square Garden twice, winning the tournament in 1990 and making it to the Championship Game in 1994. The Commodores have won the SEC Tournament three times, the most recent in 2012.
Vanderbilt has sent many players to the NBA including Festus Ezeli, Jan Van Breda Koff, Jeff Turner, Will Perdue, Derrick Byars, Frank Kornet, and many more. Are they next Commodores to make it in the NBA on this year’s team? Come out to Memorial Gym and find out.
Memorial Gym is one of the more unique venues in all of college basketball. It opened in 1952 and holds over 15,000 fans for Vandy home games. It is the only basketball arena in the nation with the benches set up along the baselines instead of the sidelines, This is because the floor is raised so the people in the front rows are looking up at the floor. If the benches were on the sidelines those fans would not be able to see. This makes Memorial Gym a very tough place to play for the visiting team.
You will enjoy your view of the court and also some great concession items such as pizza, chili, BBQ sandwiches while you enjoy a great game. Memorial Gym is known as the “Fenway Park” of SEC basketball. The fans are into the game and the students create quite a tough environment. Vanderbilt has a reputation of being a place where #1 ranked teams get upset. The Commodores in recent years have upset the top ranked team on four different occasions at Memorial Gym.
The Commodores are part of the SEC, one of college basketball’s best conferences. Teams such as Kentucky, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, Missouri, South Carolina, Alabama, Auburn, Arkansas, Ole Miss, LSU, Mississippi State and Texas A&M will be on the Commodores schedule with most of them coming to play at Memorial Gym. You can’t ask for a better home schedule than Vanderbilt’s. There is not much better than a day of SEC basketball and Memorial Gym is one of its best venues.
Many of these teams will get to the postseason this year. The winner of the SEC Tournament will get an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament but they will all be trying to win enough games to earn an at-large bid. Several will be successful and one of those teams is likely to be Vanderbilt.
You will not want to miss out on any of the great college basketball action at Memorial Gym this season. Bring the whole family to as many games as you can this season.
