North Carolina State is one of the elite programs in college basketball. They have been to the NCAA Tournament 26 times. They’ve been to the Sweet Sixteen 11 times, the Elite Eight six times, the Final Four three times and have won two National Championships (1974, 1983).
Some of the great Wolfpack players to go on to the NBA include Nate McMillan, Chris Corchian, Vinny Del Negro, Tom Burleson, Tom Gugliotta, David Thompson, Monte Towe, Dereck Whittenburg, Sidney Lowe, Thurl Bailey, Lorenzo Charles, and many more.
Norm Sloan led the Wolfpack to their first NCAA Tournament Championship in 1974. Thompson, Towe, and Burleson were the stars of that team who ended UCLA‘s streak at seven in a row. In 1984, Jim Valvano led the Wolfpack to an improbable run that saw the underdogs win the ACC Tournament to qualify for the NCAA Tournament, then win several nailbiters during the NCAA Tournament. They pulled one of the biggest upsets in sports history when they beat the heavily favored Houston Cougars on Charles putback at the buzzer of an airball.
Valvano, less than a decade later was diagnosed with cancer. He was awarded the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the 1993 ESPY Awards where he announced he was starting the Jimmy V Foundation for cancer research which has raised millions for the cause.
North Carolina State plays their home games at PNC Arena which opened in 1999 and seats nearly 20,000 fans. When you walk inside you will see all of the retired numbers and championship banners and you know this is big tie college hoops!
There are so many great memories associated with North Carolina State basketball. The 1974 team knocking off UCLA at the Final Four was a huge game. Not many folks beat UCLA in those days. And who can forget Valvano running around the court in New Mexico, looking for someone to hug after the Wolfpack’s 1983 championship?
