The Long Beach State 49ers basketball team has been to the NCAA Tournament nine times, although three of those have been vacated. Two of those vacated were in 1971 and 1972 when they made it to the Elite Eight both times. They did get to the Sweet Sixteen in 1970 and that one did count.
The 49ers have been to the NIT seven times in their history where they have advanced to the second round twice. Some of the 49ers great players include Craig Hodges, Morlon Wiley, Bryon Russell, Lucious Harris, and many others who have gone on to play in the NBA. The Walter Pyramid is actually a Pyramid shaped arena, making this is one of the coolest college basketball venues in the country. The fan support for the 49ers is fantastic. Even if the students are gone on a break from classes, the locals still fill up the place for home games and they make plenty of noise.
Long Beach State plays in the Big West Conference which includes teams such as Cal Poly, Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Northridge, Hawaii, UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC Riverside and UC Santa Barbara. These teams will be competing for the Big West Tournament Championship and the ticket to the Big Dance that comes with it, but will also be trying to gain an automatic NIT bid for winning the regular season title as well. So the action at the Walter Pyramid will be fierce.
