College Stadium Review: Williams Arena

The Minnesota Golden Gophers basketball team is one of the better programs in the country. They have been to the NCAA Tournament 12 times although four have since been vacated. The Gophers have been to the Sweet Sixteen four times (1997 vacated), the Elite Eight twice (1997 vacated) and the Final Four in 1997 (vacated).

The Gophers have been to the NIT 15 times and have had a lot if success. The Gophers have gone to the quarterfinals of the NIT eight times, the semifinals six times, the championship game five times and have hoisted the Championship Trophy three times (1993, 1998 and 2014).
The Gophers play in the Williams Arena, the old gym known affectionately as “The Barn” by Gophers fans. The Barn has been the home of Gophers basketball since 1928 and was home to the Minnesota hockey team until 1993. The Barn has seen a lot in its history including some National Champion college hockey teams and also hosting the 1951 Final Four won  by Kentucky.
You will not want to eat too much before the game because Williams Arena is one of the greatest venues in college basketball to tie on your feed bag. Besides your favorite concession snacks such as nachos, popcorn and hot dogs, you also a choice of Famous Dave’s BBQ, Domino’s Pizza, Subway, Dino’s Gyros and more. The Gophers basketball games are a great place for the foodie in you.
The atmosphere at The Barn is hard to top. The fans are into the game and with all of the history in the building and the old school feeling. With all of the trophies and photos of Minnesota’s sports past, you know you in a historic place.
The Big Ten Conference is the best in college basketball. With schools like Illinois, Ohio State, Penn State, Northwestern, Michigan, Michigan State, Indiana, Maryland, Rutgers, Iowa, Wisconsin, Nebraska and Purdue, you are going to get a great opponent nearly every night. You can just about bet that one of these teams will be going to the Final Four at the end of the season.
Some of the coaches who have been in charge at Minnesota include legends such as Bill Fitch, who went on to coach the Biston Celtics and Houston Rockets, Bill Musselman, Clem Haskins, Dan Monson, Tubby Smith and the current head coach, Richard Pitino.
Some of the great players to have played at Minnesota include Kevin McHale, Lou Hudson, Randy Breuer, Jim Brewer, Trent Tucker, Mychal Thompson, Chuck Mencel, Kris Humphries, Dave Winfield,  Willie Burton, Voshon Leonard and many many more.
