What To Watch For At Governors Ball 2014

This weekend marks the fourth installment of Governors Ball on New York City’s Randall’s Island. The festival has put together what is arguably its best lineup yet, and there are a lot of subplots to keep an eye on this weekend. Here are a few things we are hoping to see at Governors Ball 2014.

What To Watch For At Gov Ball 2014

New music from indie pioneers

What: Spoon, Interpol and TV On the Radio have all announced plans for new albums, and will be playing new material this weekend.

Why: Usually, a band that is more than 10 years old playing new material sounds less than appealing. These three bands are the exception. These are the super-hip older cousins of your favorite indie band.

Killer Mike joining Outkast for “The Whole World”

What: Killer Mike’s big break came on the Outkast smash-hit, “The Whole World.” Outkast and Killer Mike’s Run the Jewels are both scheduled for Friday.

Why: The ATLiens have been closing their set with that track on this comeback tour, and Killer Mike was set to join in at Coachella before the band was cut-off. Hopefully they will get the timing right this weekend.

Odd Future running amok

What: Three Odd Future artists (Tyler the Creator, Earl Sweatshirt and the Internet) are scheduled to perform this weekend.

Why: You can bet that the entire Odd Future gang will be in town this weekend, and hopefully some kind of shenanigans will ensue. We are also hoping Tyler and Earl will link up at some point during their respective sets.

Disclosure and friends

What: Disclosure‘s debut album featured an impressive lineup of collaborators; we are hoping to see a couple of them on stage with the duo this weekend.

Why: Unfortunately, Sam Smith will be in the U.K., but there a couple of other high-profile collabs that seem more feasible. New York native Mary J. Blige is our wildcard pick. A safer bet would be AlunaGeorge jumping on stage for “White Noise.”

A partial Dead Weather reunion

What: The Kills and Jack White are both scheduled to perform Saturday. The Kills’ Alison Mosshart is part of White’s side project Dead Weather.

White has been digging deep into his catalog at recent shows. It would be super dope to see Mosshart join him on stage for “Cut Like a Buffalo” or “Hang You From the Heavens.”

New material from Grimes

What: The Canadian indie-pop darling has been teasing new material on Twitter.

Why: If her tweets are any indication, Grimes has some bangers on deck. One song was allegedly written for Rhianna. Though Rhi Rhi passed on the track, we are certainly excited to hear it.

Chance the Rapper with James Blake (maybe Skrillex?)
What: Chance the Rapper and his roommate James Blake are both scheduled to perform this weekend.

Why: The two phenoms have linked up on wax for “Life Round Here,” and have since moved in together to write more music. Seems like a pretty safe bet that they will link up at some point. Also, don’t be surprised if Chance spits his verse on “Coast Is Clear” during Skrillex‘s set.
