Lollapalooza Hip Hop Guide: Looking Back

Lollapalooza 2015 is fast approaching.  2015 marks the 15th active year of the music festival which was started by Jane’s Addiction lead singer Perry Farrell.  Starting July 31st fans will be treated to 3 days full of musical acts from genres like Rock, Pop, EDM & Country.  But there is one genre that is often, and unfairly left out of the conversation when it comes to the annual festival, Hip Hop. Below we’ve compiled data from previous festivals, especially in regards to Lollapalooza Hip Hop & rap, in order to paint a clearer picture of how the storied event and one of the most popular genres of music overlap.

Chief Xcel producer for the rap duo Blackalicious, who performed at 2006’s Lollapalooza told us what the experience of the festival was like

“Lollapalooza in ’06 was incredible. The crowd was bananas… the weather was gorgeous… ran into so many artist we hadn’t seen in a minute. In the short time we were there we got to check out Sa Ra and Gnarles Barkley. It was one of those whirlwind kind of days where we flew in, played, hung out for a few hours, then headed to the airport to play our next show. That 8 hours that we spent there was one of our dopest experiences ever in Chicago. It was a perfect summer day.”
