College Stadium Review: Liberty Bowl Stadium

The Memphis Tigers are an up-and-coming program in the American Athletic Conference. The AAC added the Tigers mostly because of their basketball prowess when the league formed. Little did they realize they were getting a good football team as well. Last year’s Tigers were part of the three-way tie for the AAC Championship with UCF and Cincinnati. Of those three schools, the Tigers were the only one to win their bowl game when they beat the BYU Cougars in a thriller at the Miami Beach Bowl at the new Marlins Park, the site of the old Orange Bowl that saw so many classic college football games.

If you ever wondered what the “Big Sombrero” was like in Tampa before it was torn down to make room for Raymond James Stadium, go visit the Liberty Bowl. But one thing the old Tampa Stadium did not have was a brand new 108 foot tall video board. So this stadium now has an old school NFL mixed with modern NFL feel.
Of course, when in Memphis, show up for the game early and stay late because you are in one of America’s greatest cities for a party. Music, barbecue, and drinks make Memphis the place to be for your football watching trip. Be sure to visit the Cooper-Young Historical District after the game for some good food and music and maybe a little shopping as well.
Memphis has some great games to pick from on the home schedule this year as they try to defend their AAC Championship. The home games include Missouri State, Cincinnati, Ole Miss, Tulane, Navy and SMU. The Ole Miss-Memphis game will be one to get your tickets to as these old rivals meet. That will be a great game between the Tigers and one of the SEC West powerhouse programs. Tickets will go fast for that one. Don’t wait to get tickets for the Cincinnati game as this one will be between two of last season’s AAC co-champs. This game might go a long way toward deciding this year’s champion as well.
Memphis is known as a basketball school. But the football program has sent many players on to the NFL such as DeAngelo Williams, Isaac Bruce and Steve Gostkowski.
