MLB Player Profile: Mark Teixeira

At age 35 and in his seventh year as a member of the New York Yankees, 1st baseman Mark Teixeira is finally living up to the huge $180 million contract he signed as a free agent way back in 2009. At that time, Teixeira was the top player available and, as a result, he had many suitors.

It came as no surprise that the Bronx Bombers outbid all other interested teams for Teixeira’s services. They are the wealthiest team in Major League baseball and generally are willing to pay more for a player they want.

Teixeira played well that first year and helped his new team win the 2009 World Series. It is the only championship team he has been on in his thirteen year career.

Mark Teixeira actually began his career on April 1, 2003 for the Texas Rangers, the team that drafted him in 2001. Although his first game was largely forgettable, this dynamic first baseman enjoyed five productive years for the Rangers. In that time, he hit one hundred forty home runs and had an impressive four hundred fifty runs batted in (RBIs).

Mark Teixeira spent the next two years of his career, 2007 and part of 2008, as a member of the Atlanta Braves. In his time with the National League team he managed to hit thirty seven home runs while driving in one hundred forty three runs.

Traded to the Angels of Anaheim mid-way through the 2008 season, he finished the year hitting thirteen home runs and driving home forty three runs.

It was in 2009 when he became a high paid member of the New York Yankees that Teixeira gained national prominence and produced his best numbers. In seven years with the New York club he has pounded an imposing one hundred eighty four home runs and his RBIs are at five hundred sixty four.

Importantly, after injuries the past several years robbed him of precious playing time and production the Yankees sorely needed, the 2015 All Star first baseman is having what can be described as a “career year.” The Bronx Bombers have played one hundred games and Teixeira has won a fair share of them with his power. He has an impressive twenty five home runs, a number that places him among the league leaders and has driven in countless key runs, some of which have been game winners.

The reason for his success in 2015 appears to be related to his good health. He has managed to stay on the field and off the Disabled List.

When he did that in the past, he was able to earn his way on to 3 All Star teams, win five Gold Glove awards and two Silver Slugger awards, all proof of his excellence and ability..

There can be no doubt. At age 35, Mark Teixeira has shown himself to be one of the best players in Major League baseball. There is every reason to believe he will continue his outstanding on-field performance as long as he remains healthy and is able to play.
