With SXSW turning into an orgy of music and corporate sponsorships, Austin has become the perfect place for mtvU’s Woodie Awards Festival. The event used to be a traditional awards show filmed during SXSW; over the past two years, however, the Woodies has turned into a day-long festival celebrating emerging artists. This year’s event featured a pretty solid lineup of performers. Hit the jump to see our five favorites.
Best Performances At mtvU Woodies Festival
1. Childish Gambino – “3005/Sweatpants”
Donald Glover–a.k.a. Childish Gambino– recently left NBC’s Community to further pursue his musical career. If this performance is any indication, he made the right decision.
2. Iggy Azalea with Charli XCX – “Fancy”
These two just released a Clueless-inspired video for this track. The video is a lot of fun, and this performance carries the same energy. Iggy and Charli seem to have some genuine chemistry, hopefully they will continue to work together in the future.
3. Phantogram – “Fall In Love”
This electro-pop duo is no stranger to televised live performances. They have been heavy on the late-night talk show scene for the past couple months, and this performance at the Woodies is another solid effort.
4. Vic Mensa – “Feel That”
Vic Mensa is one of the hottest names in hip-hop right now. The Chicago emcee is more than capable on the mic, and the raw energy of his live performances make him an artist to keep an eye on. Watch the video below for proof.
5. Sam Smith – “Leave Your Lover”
The man behind Disclosure’s smash-hit, “Latch,” is on his own now. Smith delivered one of the more subdued performances of the day, but there is no denying that voice.
Honorable mention: Lil’ Wayne Opens The Show
It was not much of performance, but Tunechi is back. This was one of our favorite storylines of this year’s SXSW: The reemergence of Weezy F. Baby.
