The University of Tulsa’s men’s football team played poorly in 2014. The squad, under the leadership of fourth year Head Coach Bill Blankenship, managed to win just two games while losing ten. As a member of the American Athletic Conference (AAC), this team also performed poorly against Conference foes. In fact, it lost six games while winning only two.
Coach Blankenship was fired by the school’s Athletic Director after the football season ended. Over the course of his relatively brief career as Head Coach at the University of Tulsa, he produced just twenty-four wins while his squad lost twenty-seven games.
The 2015 football season began with an Interim Head Coach in charge while the Athletic Director conducted a search for a permanent leader. The Golden Hurricane, as this team is known, started the new season at home on September 5th. Florida Atlantic University (FAU) was the opponent and the home team prevailed in an exciting and competitive game. The final score was 47-44 in overtime.
The Golden Hurricane approached its second game on September 12th with confidence. This contest took place on the road, at the University of New Mexico. Somewhat surprisingly, the University of Tulsa improved its record to 2-0 when it beat the home team by a score of 40-21.
Good feelings permeated the locker room for this team when it traveled to the University of Oklahoma to compete against the 16th ranked Sooners last Saturday afternoon on September 19th. The Golden Hurricane performed well, but lost for the first time in 2015 by a score of 52-38.
After just three weeks, it seems that this squad from the University of Tulsa is performing at a much higher level than it did one year ago. Time will tell, of course, if this improved play continues.
The Golden Hurricane still has home games against the University of Houston on October 3rd, the University of Louisiana-Monroe on October 10th, Memphis University on October 23rd, the University of Central Florida (UCF) on November 7th and the U.S. Naval Academy on November 21st.
The team’s remaining road games appear to be against squads that the Golden Hurricane can beat. They include a visit to East Carolina University on October 17th, Southern Methodist University (SMU) on October 31st, the University of Cincinnati Bearcats on November 14th and the University of Tulane on November 27th.
The Golden Hurricane has already shown that it is fielding a much better team than the squad that represented it in 2014. In fact, the University of Tulsa football team has already matched last year’s win total.
The remaining schedule features some tough opponents, of course, but also includes a number of winnable games listed. It seems like a long-shot at this point, but the Golden Hurricane can win as many as five or six games this season.
And if that happens, it may actually receive an invitation to a bowl game. That would be a great accomplishment.
