The last few decades has seen its share of iconic musical duos. Daft Punk, Matt & Kim, The White Stripes and Sleigh Bells are just some of the duos we’ve seen in just the last twenty years. But it is Rodrigo y Gabriela who I would consider one of the most underrated musical duos right now. Up until recently, I had not listened to their music. With an open mind and an enthused heart, I made my way to the Electric Factory.
They’ve been a featured artist on MTV, have been on almost every major late night talk show and have even performed at The White House. However, it was the energy of the band and the equally-matched energy of Philadelphia that really blew me away.
The show started with the duo sitting elegantly, surrounded by incense candles. Faster-paced songs followed when it became clear that this was unlike any rock, pop or folk show I had been to. Gabriela probably felt the same – she spent the majority of her time on stage running, jumping and repeatedly making a “heart” with her hands. The energy hit a peak with a well-done cover on the summer anthem “Get Lucky”. The show continued in this intensity, with the duo speaking only to thank the crowd and to apologize for “…not having great English.” No one minded at all – we were all hypnotized by their hypnotic guitar strumming.
