“Sometimes I wonder what I’m a gonna do, cause there ain’t no cure for the summer time blues”….that is unless you live in New York City. Very few words sound as beautiful strung together in a sentence as “free”, “live music” and “outdoors.” Summer Stage offers free, live music in various outdoor venues all summer long all over New York City.
When contemplating how to spend my 2013 summer and simultaneously looking for a new job I stumbled upon a gig with Summer Stage. I was skeptical at first not knowing the line-up ahead of time, but being the music lover that I am, I decided to plunge in head first. We’re now a month in and I’m having a blast.
Summer Stage has been rocking Manhattan since ’86 and has expanded programming to all five boroughs. Working for the flagship venue, Rumsey Playfield in Central Park, is both insane and incredible at the same time. The lineup of performers is quite diverse, ranging from the Zombies to Jimmy Eat World, from Trombone Shorty to Cameo, and from The Airborne Toxic Event to Bobby McFerrin and all the way The Metropolitan Opera. Each performance attracts up-to-5,000 fans and each crowd brings its own personality and energy to Rumsey Playfield. Regardless of the show, you can bet that fans will have their homemade-signage and picnic materials ready to dance the evening away.
Even the Global Family Day brought very eclectic musical acts from country to rock to hip hop. Each day I walk into the park unsure of what to expect and ready to fall in love with yet another new band.
There’s no doubt in my mind that this summer is going to keep on grooving and that the best is yet to come. The next time you are looking for an amazing way to spend your summer nights (and remember it’s FREE) come check out Summer Stage! For a full line-up visit SummerStage.org or just swing by Rumsey Playfield and pick up a schedule!
