Bon Iver

In 2007, after the breakup of his band, DeYarmond Edison, and a mononucleosis hepatitis diagnosis, singer-songwriter Justin Vernon spent a winter hunkered down in his parents cabin in the woods of Wisconsin. During this time he watched Northern Exposure which provided inspiration for his next great project, Bon Iver.

Bon Iver is derived from the french greeting “bon hiver” which means “good winter”. When he had first moved to the cabin, Vernon’s goal was to recuperate from the breakup of his band and his illness, however he found inspiration instead of heartbreak. When he had moved to the cabin he brought with him some basic recording equipment and used that to record each instrument and piece them together. After recording the wordless melody, he listened to the track on repeat while writing lyrics according to the melody.

Vernon had originally intended to keep the album to himself or to send them out as demos but close friends and family heard the tracks and encouraged him to release it independently. 500 albums were produced, 17 of which were sent to press and labels. At the release show and following reviews, Bon Iver received favorable reviews and began to get attention from major labels.

In October of that year, Bon Iver signed with Jagjaguwar, a small independent label that matched Vernon’s ideals. Bon Iver’s first album with Jagjaguwar, For Emma, Forever ago, was released in February of 2008 and has since garnered critical acclaim. It was the seventh highest rated album of 2008 according to Metacritic, and fell at No. 29 on Pitchfork Media’s “The Top 200 Albums of 2000s” list. Rolling Stone also listed the album on their Top 50 Albums of 2008 and was No. 92 on their list of the 100 Best Albums of the 2000s.

2008 brought Bon Iver one of their best songs, “Skinny Love”, which was featured on the NBC series Chuck that October. In December of that year Bon Iver performed the single on the Late Show with David Letterman. After these performances, 9 more of Bon Iver’s singles were featured on shows, including Grey’s Anatomy. In 2010, Bon Iver collaborated with Kanye West on his track “Lost In the World”, which featured pieces from Bon Iver’s “Woods”. This collaboration publicized him to a wider audience.

Bon Iver, Bon Iver was released in June of 2011. For this album, Vernon added new members to create a new sound for the album. Prior to the release, Bon Iver was creating build-up around the album, first by releasing the album art and a YouTube video that depicted how the art was made. Unfortunately, a month before the official release date, the album was mistakenly made available for download on iTunes and before it was taken down a handful of users had downloaded it. In 2012, it was announced that the group was taking a break, and it was unclear to many whether it was temporary or an official breakup.

In 2014 the band released the single “Heavenly Father”, which was featured on the soundtrack of Wish I was Here. The following year, the group met again and played their first show in almost three years, where they debuted two new songs. In November of 2015, Bon Iver announced a tour or Asia beginning in 2016. While many thought it was the end of Bon Iver three years earlier, it seems as if they’re just getting started. This is a must-see show, Vernon loves what he does and demonstrates that in every song and every live performance.
