Boston Bruins Overview

Since the year 1924, the black and gold of the Boston Bruins have skated across ice rinks. Since 1928, their home ice rink had been the famed Boston Garden, a place the team called home for close to 70 years. The Bruins are the third-oldest team in the NHL. They are the oldest team from the United States and rank fifth all-time in Stanley Cup championships. Boston is an Original Six franchise and hails from one of the most passionate sports cities in America. With such fabled history combined with tremendous recent success, the Bruins are one of the elite teams in all of professional sports.

The titles started early for Boston. Its first came in 1929 after making it to the finals two years prior and losing to the Ottawa Senators. The team would only miss the playoffs five times between 1926 and 1959. It would win two more Stanley Cups within that time frame as well.

A down decade in the 1960s was followed by two more Cups in the early 70s and another impressive postseason streak. Of course, while the Bruins continued to make the playoffs, they wouldn’t manage their sixth and most recent league championship until 2011, close to 40 years after their fifth.

That is not to say titles are the be-all and end-all. Boston won two other conference championships in that dry spell. It won the Presidents’ Trophy in 1990 and then again in 2014. The division titles are too numerous to count, with 10 coming in the 70s and 80s alone. And then there were the players; oh, the players!

Seven of the single-digit jersey numbers will never be worn again in Boston. Three more numbers are also retired giving the franchise an even 10 in the rafters. There have been 13 Hart Trophy-winning seasons, eight Calder Trophies, 10 Vezinas and 14 Norris-winning seasons. The Hall of Fame is filled with Bruins players and builders. This is one of the most successful franchises in hockey history because of its age, but it is one of the best because of its talent.

The retired numbers are worth going through. Number two is retired for defenseman Eddie Shore. Shore won four Hart Trophies during the 1930s. That is the most MVP awards for any defenseman in NHL history and ranks third all-time behind Wayne Gretzky and Gordie Howe. Shore was an eight-time All-Star and only made it eight times because the event didn’t exist until after the 1931 season. And he helped the Bruins win two titles.

Number three is retired for Lionel Hitchman. Hitchman was the second person ever to have his number retired in North American professional sports.

Number four belonged to the legendary Bobby Orr. Orr won the Norris Trophy as the league’s best defenseman a record eight times in a row, won the Hart Trophy three times in a row and is the only defenseman to have ever won the Art Ross for leading the league in scoring. He did it twice. Despite having a relatively short career, Orr will forever remain one of the greatest players in league history.

If not for Orr, Ray Bourque would be remembered as the greatest defenseman in franchise history, which is why his number 77 is retired. Bourque scored over 1,500 points for the Bruins, number one all-time. He had over 1,100 assists and won the Norris five times. Bourque was so revered in Boston that the city cheered and held a parade for him after he finally won the Stanley Cup at age 40, after 22 seasons…as a member of the Colorado Avalanche!

Bourque used to wear number seven when he first arrived but gave it up and switched to 77 when the jersey was retired for Phil Esposito in 1987. Esposito is third all-time in Bruins scoring even though he barely cracked 600 career games in Boston. He topped 1,000 points in a single decade, the first player to ever do that. His 1.62 points-per-game as a Bruin would rank as the third-best mark in NHL history over a career. Espo won the Art Ross five times and the Hart twice. It’s hard to crack a list of all-time greats on a team as historic as the Bruins, but he did.

As did Cam Neely, whose number eight was retired in 2004. Neely was a 50-goal scorer three different seasons. He topped 100 penalty minutes in six different seasons. Neely never won the Cup as a player but has been the team’s president since 2010 and was in charge for the 2011 championship.

That 2011 team was led by captain Zdeno Chara, alternate Patrice Bergeron and goalie Tim Thomas. That season, Thomas won the Vezina as well as the Conn Smythe award. The team had a nice mix of veterans and youngsters that allowed it to win the whole thing. There are a number of contributors who still remain from the championship squad on the Bruins, including playoff-points leaders Bergeron and David Krejci.

But while Chara and the like may be on their way out of the league after so many years of good hockey, a collection of talent remains ready to make another run.

The mainstay in goal for the current Bruins is the man who backed up Thomas on the title team, Tuukka Rask. Rask is one of the premiere goaltenders in the NHL. He won over 30 games with a goals-against average 2.30 or below for the second consecutive season. He’s collected 26 shutouts in his 251 career starts.

Relative newcomers Dougie Hamilton, Loui Eriksson, Reilly Smith and others bring depth to a team that may simply lack the big-time scorer Boston fans are used to. There certainly is no Orr, Esposito or Neely among the current ranks. Last year, no one finished with more points than Bergeron’s 55, and Brad Marchand led the team with only 24 goals. Of course, even with the down year, the Bruins still finished just one win out of the playoffs. When Boston is down, it isn’t down very far and doesn’t stay down for long.
