Boston Celtics Overview

Boston Celtics Franchise History

Few could argue that the Boston Celtics are the most successful franchise in the history of the National Basketball Association. In fact, the Celtics might very well be one of the most decorated organization in all of sports. The team first made its way onto the hardwood in 1946, and the franchise's first season with a 22-38 record would not be a sign of things to come down the road.

After four straight losing seasons to start their NBA campaign, Boston would finally make its move up the league ladder and really start to find a lot of success. Six straight playoff appearances would help the franchise start to build some confidence in its ability to become a major factor on the basketball circuit, and they would more than capitalize on this initial run starting with the 1956-1957 regular season.

The supremely talented Bob Cousy would help navigate the Celtics all the way to the NBA Finals where they would outlast the St. Louis Hawks in a thrilling seven game series. However, the Hawks would indeed get their sweet revenge a year later when they ousted the Celtics in just six games. But Boston clearly wasn't too happy about that turn of events, because all they did was go out and win a ridiculous eight NBA titles in a row, five of which came at the expense of the Lakers in the Finals.

If anyone thought the Celtics were done there, they were wrong. The Philadelphia 76ers put an end to the streak in 1967, but Boston simply picked right back up where it left off and topped the Lakers two more years in a row to rack up their 11th NBA crown. If there was any doubt as to who the top dog was in the league, there was no doubting it after such an impressive feat.

Boston would add two more titles to its total before a young man named Larry Bird burst onto the scene in 1979. The Hick From French Lick would deservedly be named Rookie of the Year in his first Celtics campaign, and then he helped the team experience even more NBA title glory during his second season after the franchise overwhelmed the Houston Rockets in the NBA Finals.

The Celtics would march their way to four NBA Finals appearances in the mid-80s, winning two and losing two during that stretch. Of course, it was the magical Bird that orchestrated this success, with his supporting cast also contributing key performances that led to more championship trophies.

But after losing to the Lakers in 1987, it would take 21 years for Boston to gets its revenge over the west coast rivals. The Celtics triumphed over Los Angeles to win the 2008 league trophy, but came up just short two years later when the Lakers would an awesome seven-game set.

Boston Celtics Marquee Players

Where do you even begin in listing the plethora of legendary talent that has made its way through Boston over the years? Perhaps you would have to start with the iconic Bill Russell, who is no doubt one of the finest players to ever grace the basketball court. The frontcourt phenom was able to secure 11 NBA titles as a player and even coached the team at the same time for two seasons, which of course, also resulted in championships.

There was Bob Cousy, who was a major factor in helping the team build its success before Russell entered the mix. Then there was Bird, who without question fueled the Celtics' resurgence during the 80s along with teammates like Robert Parish, Kevin McHale, and Dennis Johnson. And then there was the trio of Paul Pierce, Ray Allen, and Kevin Garnett that made Boston the most feared team in the league several years ago.

And while he wasn't a player, there's no doubt that you have to mention the late Red Auerbach as perhaps the most influential figure in Celtics history. He was the general for the team's eight straight titles during the Russell era, and will undoubtedly go down in history as one of the best that there has ever been.

Boston Celtics Conference and NBA Titles

We've covered how successful the Celtics have been over the years, but that's put that into a nice crisp number to really hammer home the dramatic effect.

Boston has won a whopping 17 NBA championships since their inception, and it has also added 21 divisional titles and 21 conference titles to go along with that.

At this point, it may be hard for the Celtics to fit anymore trophies into their trophy case, and they may have to buy a separate building to store all of their hardware.

Boston Celtics Venue Information

The Boston Garden is the venue that is most memorable to basketball fans since the Celtics played their home games their for almost 50 years. Plenty of magic was created in that arena, and after the team made its move to TD Garden (then known as the FleetCenter) in 1995, things just haven't been the same.

The arena seats a little under 19,000 for Celtics games and has hosted numerous prestigious events throughout the years since its opening.

But no matter what anyone tells you, the venue just doesn't have that same old school feel that the Garden had during Boston's heyday.

Boston Celtics 2014-2015 Season Recap

Brad Stevens' second NBA season at the helm of the Celtics went much better than his first. The franchise improved its win total by 15 games and even managed to make it into the playoffs.

Despite the fact that Boston was swept out of the first round by the surging Cleveland Cavaliers, it was certainly a big step in the right direction for a Celtics team that is looking to find some of its previous success.

After trading Rajon Rondo during the year and adding some key young talents to the roster, the Celtics now seem to have a plan in place to help the franchise finally return to championship glory once again.
