Brad Paisley Biography

For a decade and a half, country singer Brad Paisley has been one of the most important figures in the country music scene. He’s one of the genre’s most decorated stars: Paisley can boast Grammys, Academy of Country Music Awards, Country Music Association Awards, and American Music Awards. He’s also a member of the Grand Ole Opry, country music’s most prestigious institution.

But Paisley’s incredible success and his stuffed trophy case didn’t come to him overnight. In fact, he rose to fame from unlikely circumstances. Paisley had a country upbringing in a small town in West Virginia, and he worked his whole life to earn the success that he enjoys today. Ask anyone holding Brad Paisley tickets and they’ll tell you that it’s because of his country upbringing – not in spite of it – that he’s earned so many fans around the country. Paisley’s music rings with authenticity, and while it may not have been easy for him to get this far, it’s easy for fans to see why he did.

Paisley was born in 1972 in the tiny city of Glen Dale, West Virginia. His family wasn’t wealthy: his father worked for the West Virginia Department of Transportation, and his mother was schoolteacher. Brad was the Paisley’s only child.

Paisley had a classic West Virginia childhood, and his country upbringing would later influence his music. The iconography of small towns and rustic landscapes is everywhere in Paisleys music, and his fans can tell that he really has lived the life he sings about.

Country music was popular where Paisley grew up, so it’s no surprise that he tried playing some of it himself. But Paisley owes a particular debt to his grandfather. It was Mrs. Paisley’s father who first gave his grandson a guitar. It was a Danelectro Silvertone, a guitar sold by Sears, and Paisley fell in love with it immediately. He practiced endlessly and began to sing the country songs that played on the radio in West Virginia.

It didn’t take long for young Brad Paisley to play his first show. He performed in public for the first time at age 10, singing in his church. He wrote his first original song at 13, and he soon formed a band with his guitar teacher and a couple of friends.

Paisley had started playing music young, and he got his first big break at a young age, too. After his junior high school principal heard him perform an original song, Paisley was invited to sing at the local Rotary Club. From there, he got an invitation to be a part of Jamboree USA, a country radio show. Soon, Paisley was a part of the show every week, opening for big-name acts.

Paisley would have to wait for years for his next career breakthrough, but he played tirelessly for Jamboree USA for eight years. He eventually became the youngest person ever inducted into the Jamboree’s Hall of Fame.

Paisley graduated from high school and then headed off to college. After a two-year stint at West Liberty State College, he headed to Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee, to major in music business. Upon graduation in 1995, he inked a deal with EMI Music Publishing to write songs for their country music stars.

Paisley was good at writing songs for other singers, but he always dreamed of performing his music himself. That opportunity finally came along in the late 90s, when he caught on with Arista Nashville and was able to release his first single. Later in the year, his song “He Didn’t Have to Be” became his first number one country hit. Paisley’s career as a performer was taking off.

Paisley’s debut year was a big one. His album Who Needs Pictures was a hit, and he earned several awards and nominations. Paisley won the Academy of Country Music’s award for best new male vocalist, and he was nominated for the Grammys’ Best New Artist category. In 2001, Paisley was inducted into the Grand Old Opry. At 28, he was the youngest member ever to join country music’s most prestigious institution. Though it had taken Paisley years to work his way up from a child performer to a songwriter and eventually to a solo artist, it only took him a very short time to go from being a debut performer to being a country music superstar. All his work was paying off, and it was happening all at once.

Paisley didn’t let the opportunity pass him by. He headed back to the studio and recorded his follow-up album, Part II. Part II, like Who Need Pictures, went platinum – a feat that Paisley repeated with Mud on the Tires (2003), Time Well Wasted (2005), and 5th Gear (2007). In between releasing his wildly popular albums, Paisley headed out on tours and gave fans around the country the chance to get Brad Paisley tickets for the first time.

The 2000s were a good time for Paisley’s personal life, too. He met actress Kimberly Williams and began dating her in 2001. In 2003, the two married. In 2007, they welcomed their first child, and in 2009, they welcomed their second. Paisley named his second child Jasper Warren, after Paisley’s maternal grandfather – the man that had bought Brad that Sears Danelectro Silvertone guitar all those years earlier.

In the 2010s, Paisley has continued to be one of the country music genre’s most important voices. He’s still recording and performing at a remarkable clip, giving old and new fans alike the chance to hear more new music and get Brad Paisley tickets for the latest tour. Paisley’s most recent studio effort is Moonshine in the Trunk (2014), which hit number one on the country music charts. That’s an old trick for Paisley – he’s had albums hit number one on the country charts seven times before this – but it’s something that never gets old for the singer who started all those years ago with a guitar bought from Sears.
