Bryan Adams Bio

Bryan Adams is one of rock and roll’s most familiar figures. He’s been putting together hits as a singer-songwriter and rock guitarist for the better part of four decades, and his songs – including “Summer of ‘69” and “Cuts Like a Knife” – continue to get airplay on radio stations to this day. It’s easy to think of Bryan Adams as having always been around, but, of course, that’s not true. In fact, Adams has had a unique path to stardom.

When Bryan Adams was born in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, not much about him suggested that he would become an international rock star. His parents weren’t musicians: his father was a military man, having served in the British army before migrating to Canada with Bryan’s mother and serving the armed forces there. As a child, Bryan moved from place to place as his father’s career demanded, living briefly in Portugal, Austria, and Israel with his parents and brother.

From this unique but unlikely background, Bryan Adams became a musician. His musical future was all in his own hands: while many musicians can tell the story of who gave them their first guitar, Adams has only himself to thank. He worked as a dishwasher at the age of 14, slowly saving up the money he needed to buy his own guitar. Once he had it he practiced constantly in his mother’s home in Vancouver, British Columbia. When he wasn’t attending school, he auditioned to play guitar in local Canadian bands. He was just 15 years old when bands started to notice his talent for the instrument and offered him the chance to play with them. He dropped out of school to go on tour with several different bands, playing in nightclubs that he was too young to legally enter as a customer. He even recorded his first album, as a singer with the band Sweeney Todd, though his time with them soon came to an end. For the most part, nobody sold Bryan Adams tickets to these events: they were bar gigs and nightclub gigs with bands that have since faded into obscurity.

Adams learned a lot from his time touring, but at 17 he headed back to Vancouver to try to get some recording done. He got work as a backing vocalist for the CBC and was finally getting paid good money for his talents.

Adams’ work in the Vancouver studio scene was key to his career, but his biggest break came outside the studio, when he was introduced to Jim Vallance by a mutual friend. Vallane, a former member of the rock band Prism, was pursuing a second career as a songwriter and studio musician. He agreed to work with the Bryan Adams, who was then just 18. The two would continue to work together for the entirety of Adams’ career.

Adams met Vallance in 1978, and he signed to A&M records that same year. It wasn’t a big payday – Adams signed for a token fee of $1 – but he finally had the support of a record company. Adams started recording demos, and his work was promising from the start. Before he could even get his first album out, his songs were being covered by more prominent Canadian recording artists.

In 1980, Adams finally got his own versions of his songs out in the form of his self-titled debut album. That album and his second album, 1981’s You Want It You Got It, were both moderate successes, but they would soon be eclipsed by the monster success of his third record.

Adams released his third album, Cuts Like a Knife, in 1983. It was an instant sensation thanks to its strong singles, including the monster hit “Straight from the Heart.” “Straight from the Heart” cracked the top ten on Billboard’s Hot 100, and other songs from the album (including the title track, “Cuts Like a Knife”) also did very well. The success of those singles helped the album itself reached number eight on the albums chart.

After toiling in the music business since the age of 15, Adams had finally gotten the recognition that he deserved. But in the fast-moving music industry, he’d need another classic album to cement his place as a true superstar.

Just one year later, Adams had that album. Called Reckless, the record included some of Adams’ most famous songs, including the iconic track “Summer of ’69.” Reckless went platinum a stunning five times over in the United States, where Adams was now as big as he was in Canada. Adams earned a Grammy nomination that year, and several of his new albums tracks climbed high on the Billboard charts.

The success of Reckless gave Adams the international appeal that he needed to launch a World Tour. For the first time, fans in Europe and beyond had the chance to buy Bryan Adams tickets. It was a long way from Adams’ teenage days of touring with no-name bands in Canada.

Adams’ last album of the 1980s was another success. 1987’s Into the Fire added more hits to Adams’ catalog, including “Heat of the Night” and “Hearts on Fire.” The 1980s were Adams’ heyday. He went on multiple world tours, including a sold-out tour with pop superstar Tina Turner, and he released three of his best albums. But while the 1980s were the height of Adams’ commercial success, he maintained the quality of his music throughout the 1990s and 2000s, making him one of rock music’s most enduring acts.

Adams released eight more albums in the 1990s, 2000s, and 2010. Adams has kept true to the qualities that have made him a fan favorite since he was a teenager: his most recent record, 2015’s Get Up!, was well received by critics and fans alike. Through all this, Adams has also managed to find time to pursue a photography hobby, gain a reputation for philanthropy, and – of course – tour. Adams still tours relentlessly, giving a new generation of fans the chance to buy Bryan Adams tickets for the first time. Just as he did when he was only 15 years old, Adams brings passion and talent to each live performance.
