Buffalo Sabres Overview

Buffalo Sabres Franchise History

It was in 1970 that the Buffalo Sabres first skated out onto the ice, and unlike most professional sports teams, they've been in the same place ever since they were born. While the team didn't get off to the best of starts their first couple of years in the NHL, they did turn things around rather quickly and found some unforeseen success.

Buffalo would find its groove during the 1974-1975 season and make a march all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals to go toe-to-toe with the Philadelphia Flyers. Unfortunately, the series would not turn out in the Sabres' favor, as the Flyers were able to grab all the momentum and come out victorious in only six games.

But clearly the run to the NHL's biggest series had an effect on the Sabres as a whole, as the franchise wouldn't stop there in terms of finding themselves in the post-season. The Stanley Cup loss marked the first of 11 straight seasons that the team earned a playoff berth, and after two straight seasons without sniffing the playoffs, Buffalo came right back and reeled off eight more years in a row of playoff hockey. However, perhaps the most notable part of these playoff runs was that the team simply could not find a way to get back to the Stanley Cup Finals a single time during this stretch.

After assembling a rather talented team in the mid-90s, the Sabres would indeed get back to the promised land after a 24-year drought when they took on the Dallas Stars in the 1999 Stanley Cup round. But Buffalo would see the same result that they saw against the Flyers, with it taking the opponent only six games to send the Sabres packing.

The 1999 appearance remains as the last time the team has been able to get all the way to the finals, however, they have been able to reach the playoffs six times. The franchise's most recent trip to the post-season was in 2011 when they were yet again ousted by the nemesis Flyers in the Conference Quarterfinal round.

Buffalo Sabres Marquee Players

Nine players that have made their way through the city of Buffalo during their careers have found a way to earn Hall of Fame honors for their efforts.

Players like Gilbert Perreault, Pat LaFontaine, and Danny Gare have had their numbers retired by the organization, with Perreault being the leading scorer in the team's history.

But undoubtedly, the most popular player to ever step onto the ice for the Sabres would most likely be Dominik Hasek, whose performances in net were a thing of beauty for almost 10 years with the organization.

Although he played with four different teams during his NHL career, there's no doubt that Hasek's impact on the Sabres franchise was perhaps his most shining accolade. The Dominator didn't manage to win a Stanley Cup trophy during his time in Buffalo, but he would go on to score two of them when he joined the Detroit Red Wings. You would probably need an entire large room to hold all of the awards and trophies that Hasek accumulated throughout his years in professional hockey.

Buffalo Sabres Conference and Stanley Cup Titles

To this day, the prestigious Stanley Cup trophy still eludes the Buffalo franchise, with the team unable to secure the cup during their two attempts at it thanks to great performances from the Flyers and Stars.

Luckily, the Sabres can at least hang their hat on three conference titles and a nice sum of six divisional championships since their start.

But of course, there is just no trophy that can equal that of the Stanley Cup, and until the Sabres are able to cash in and place it in their trophy case, these conference and divisional titles won't hold much weight with the team's fans.

Buffalo Sabres Venue Information

When the team was founded back in 1970, the venue that hosted all Sabres home games was the Buffalo Memorial Auditorium. The arena opened its doors all the way back in 1940, and without question, the Sabres were the main draw there in terms of professional sports.

However, it would be time for the franchise to move in 1996, as they would cruise on over to the First Niagara Center, which resulted in The Aud – the nickname for the Auditorium – closing up shop once the team's move was complete. The Buffalo Memorial Auditorium would then be destroyed 12 years later.

Also known as the Marine Midland Arena and the HSBC Arena throughout the years, First Niagara Center creates a great atmosphere for Sabres fans to cheer on their team.

The building has undergone some pretty cool innovations over the years, and the scoreboard offers up some nice effects when the team scores a goal.

Buffalo Sabres 2014-2015 Season Recap

After finishing last in the Atlantic Division in 2014 and with the playoffs nowhere in sight, Sabres fans were hoping that the new campaign would bring about change. To them, anything would be better than having to suffer through another last-place season.

But history would repeat itself in Buffalo, as the franchise once again found itself at the very bottom of the Atlantic standings when all was said and done. The team did improve its win total by two, but 51 losses was once again the number that defined a miserable season overall.

It wasn't all that surprising that the Sabres finished last considering their overall statistics. The team was at the very bottom of the league in three of the four most important categories in all hockey – goals scored, power play percentage, and penalty kill percentage – so it's easy to understand how the season became such a failure in Buffalo.

For a club that hasn't advanced out of the first round of the playoffs in eight years, it certainly was not the result that fans were hoping for. Now all the team can do is look ahead to new season and try to climb their way back up the standings.
