Chicago Blackhawks Overview

Chicago Blackhawks Franchise History

The Chicago Blackhawks were first thrown into the professional hockey mix in 1926 and came oh so close to a winning season their first year on the ice. The Blackhawks managed to win a total of 19 games during their first campaign, which was enough to qualify them for the playoffs, but they were unable to overcome the Boston Bruins.

Unfortunately, the next two seasons were not ideal. Chicago only won a combined 14 games in the two seasons, but luckily they would turn things around in only a few short seasons with a trip all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals. While the Canadiens proved to be strong for the Blackhawks during the 1931 finals, 1934 would prove to be the start of a special run for the franchise.

Chicago got its revenge on Montreal in the quarterfinals and then marched all the way to the league's most prestigious round to take on the Detroit Red Wings. The team in red just didn't have what it takes to top a Blackhawks team that was hungry for a championship, as the organization picked up the Stanley Cup trophy after a masterful series.

It would only take four years for the Blackhawks to bring another trophy home to Chicago after a Stanley Cup triumph over the Toronto Maple Leafs, but then the championship drought would set in for quite a while. After a failed appearance in 1944, Chicago would find glory in 1961 with yet another series victory over the pesky Red Wings. However, during this run, the Blackhawks would accomplish a pretty ridiculous feat of making the playoffs 34 out of 35 straight seasons.

But in terms of a world championship, Chicago would face tough times after their 1961 title. Despite making a trip to the Stanley Cup Finals five times in the 30 years after that, the Blackhawks were not able to capitalize with a crowning achievement. Instead, the franchise would have to wait nearly 50 years before returning to the promised land with a 4-2 series win over the Philadelphia Flyers.

Three years later, the Blackhawks found themselves hoisting another Stanley Cup trophy after overtaking the Boston Bruins.

There's no doubt that the franchise is one of the most successful that the NHL has ever seen due to their incredible 60 playoff appearances and a ton of outstanding achievements on the ice throughout the years.

Chicago Blackhawks Marquee Players

Considering the amount of success that the team has achieved during its run through the NHL, it should come as no surprise that they've had an insanely high number of great players on the roster.

Seven players have had the prestigious honor of having their number retired by the club, including Stan Mikita who is the franchise's all-time leader in points scored. There is also Bobby Hull, who managed to take second place honors on that points list while also contributing the most goals of any player in Blackhawks history.

Denis Savard and Tony Esposito are among the other players that have made their numbers something special, and players this like have paved the way for a new generation of great talents like Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews to leave their mark on this historic franchise.

Chicago BlackhawksConference and Stanley Cup Titles

When you've made a whopping 60 playoff appearances in less than 100 years of existence as a franchise, you're going to have quite a few accolades on your resume. Or at least that's goal of a successful franchise.

Five Stanley Cup trophies have made their way to the great city of Chicago throughout the years, with the team's most recent one coming during the 2012-2013 season. But of course, that's not all, as the organization has also been able to capture three conference championships, which might actually be a surprisingly low number considering how many years they've made it into the post-season.

As far as division championships go, Chicago has reached the double-digit mark with 15 and will no doubt continue to add to that number since the team is certainly trending upwards these days.

Chicago Blackhawks Venue Information

After calling Chicago Stadium home for 65 years, the Blackhawks officially made the move to Chicago's United Center for the 1995 season, and they've been doing their thing on the ice there ever since.

Of course, it's also home to the Chicago Bulls of the NBA and Michael Jordan produced many legendary moments in the arena during his time on the basketball court. But the Blackhawks are slowly but surely becoming the team to see in the United Center thanks to their recent success on the ice.

When it comes to seating capacity, the arena holds a little less than 20,000 for all Blackhawks home games, with that number surpassing the mark a little bit for Bulls games.

The United Center has also seen plenty of cool features and innovations added to the arena over the years.

Chicago Blackhawks 2014-2015 Season Recap

It was business as usual for the Blackhawks during the 2014-2015 NHL season, with yet another playoff appearance earned after a 102-point campaign.

Goalkeeping was the key to success for this team during the year, and on the scoring side, it was Kane and Toews that led the way as usual. Marian Hossa and Brandon Saad also had big seasons on the points side, with those two finishing behind Kane and Toews in the points total.

The impressive year allowed them to pick up the third seed in the Western Conference, and after a heated series with the rival Nashville Predators, it was the Blackhawks who found themselves marching on to the next round.

From there, Chicago didn't play around one bit in sweeping the Minnesota Wild right out of the playoffs, thus giving the franchise another appearance in the Western Conference Finals.

A meeting with the Anaheim Ducks likely awaits the team, but if their recent play is any indication of how that series will go, the Blackhawks could very well be in line for another Stanley Cup triumph.
