Chicago Bulls History

The Chicago Bulls franchise has been around since the year 1966. They are actually the third ever NBA franchise to claim Chicago as their home, but they were the first franchise to stick around. The Bulls franchise experienced success right away, as they are the only franchise ever to make the playoffs in their inaugural season. This franchise is one of the most storied franchises in NBA history, but most of their legacy was built within a ten year span. The 1990’s decade was dominated by Chicago and it is really the only defining period for this franchise. It was such a successful stretch that it was really all they needed to become an iconic franchise.

It actually all began in 1984, when the Bulls had the third pick in the draft. Houston and Portland drafted ahead of Chicago, and with the third pick, they claimed a guy named Michael Jordan. From this point forward, the Chicago Bulls entire franchise would change. The 80’s and the 90’s were the golden ages of the NBA. Many of the all-time great players played during these two decades, including Larry Bird and Magic Johnson, among many others. Bird and Magic had great success winning many championships during this time, but it was Jordan that would ultimately separate himself from the field. The Bulls reached the playoffs in Jordan’s rookie season and in his second season. In their second go around in the playoffs they would be swept by Larry Bird’s Celtics in the opening round, but it was then when Michael Jordan began to become a household name. Despite the sweep, Jordan scored 63 points in game two, which led Larry Bird to claim that Michael was “God disguised as Michael Jordan”. Those 63 points are still the single game playoff record to this day. The following season Jordan led the league in scoring, scoring a ridiculous 37 points per game. In the playoffs, they were once again swept by Boston. For the next few seasons, Jordan would continue setting records and scoring at astronomical rates, but the Bulls were not experiencing any playoff success. Many people started to question whether Jordan could lead a team to post season success and began labeling him as just a “scorer”. The next step needed to lead the Bulls to playoff success was a coaching change. Insert Phil Jackson. The Bulls cut ties with Coach Doug Collins and inserted assistant coach Phil Jackson to the head position. That year Chicago made the conference finals but lost to Detroit in 7 games. Things changed in 1990, when the Bulls faced a rematch with Detroit in the conference finals and this time they swept them in 4 games. Then they went on to defeat Magic Johnson and the Lakers to claim their first ever championship.

The first championship was just the beginning. The Bulls went on to win the championship the next two seasons to complete the three-peat. Along the way they recorded a franchise record 67 wins, and Michael Jordan continued to take home NBA scoring titles, a feat he would accomplish 10 times in his career. After the third championship things changed drastically. Michael Jordan shocked the world by announcing he was going to retire from the NBA. His father had just been murdered and he was not in a good mental state. The Bulls had to rebound quickly in attempt to defend their title. They were left with Jordan’s running mate Scottie Pippen to lead the way. They were still a competitive team and made the playoffs, but their run of championships was over. Michael Jordan had a strange career as he actually retired a second time in attempt to follow his first love and play baseball. He had grown tired of success in basketball and wanted to play professional baseball. After Jordan’s first retirement he came back and the Bulls immediately benefited. In the late 90’s they ran off another string of three consecutive championships. Michael Jordan finished his career wish those 6 championships and a pile of records along the way. During the second 3-peat the Bulls posted a 72-10 record one year. They are still the only team to reach 70 wins in a season. The success the Bulls experienced during this 10 year stretch is second to none. Michael Jordan is considered the basketball player ever and his coach Phil Jackson won the most championships ever, with 6 of those coming in Chicago. Jordan’s sidekick Scottie Pippen was also listed in the book of the 50 greatest players of all time. The Bulls and Michael Jordan stood in the way of many great players being able to win a championship. Players such as Charles Barkley, John Stockton, Karl Malone and others would most likely have finished their careers as champions if it was not for Michael Jordan. After the second 3-peat Jordan retired again and this time it was the end of era.The 2000’s began a rebuilding phase and life without Jordan was never the same. Jordan finished his great career in Chicago with 6 championships, 6 Finals MVP trophies, 5 MVP awards, 10 first team all-NBA awards, and so many other awards or records. The run Jordan and the Bulls went on during the 1990’s was quite remarkable.

The current Bulls team may be the best team they have assembled since the Jordan era. In 2008 they had the number one overall pick and they selected Derrick Rose. Rose has suffered through many knee injuries during his time in Chicago, but when healthy he has become the best player they have had since Jordan. In the 2010-2011 season Rose led the Bulls to 62 wins and took the MVP trophy away from LeBron James. The Bulls are in the playoffs currently with the best supporting cast Rose has ever had in Jimmy Butler, Joakhim Noah, and Pau Gasol. They are attempting to bring the championship back to Chicago. Derrick Rose is a native from the Chicago area and if he can bring the city another championship, he will be able to capture the hearts of Chicago and make them forget about Michael Jordan, at least for the time being.

The Chicago Bulls call home to the largest arena in the United States, known as the United Center. It is the largest arena in terms of size, but not in capacity. The Bulls share the arena with their professional hockey team. Just under 21,000 people can fit into the United Center to catch a Bulls game. It is an arena full of history and you can go there to see all of the championship banners along with a statue of the one and only Michael Jordan, which is located just outside the arena.
