Cleveland Browns Overview

Cleveland Browns Franchise History

The Cleveland Browns first stepped onto the field for competitive football in 1946, a year after the team was founded and thrown into the mix in the All-America Football Conference. Those who have only known of the Browns in the modern era may be surprised to know just how much success they had many years ago.

Not only did Cleveland having winning seasons in its four years in the AAFC, but it also captured the league championship every single season. Yes, the Cleveland Browns were champions. But guess what? The team didn't stop there. Upon joining the National Football League, all the Browns did was win another world championship after downing the Los Angeles Rams in 1950. To further cement just how stellar this franchise was, Cleveland added an additional six straight trips to the NFL title game, with two more championships added to their trophy case in 1954 and 1955.

After taking a bit of a step back – which really wasn't all that much considering that they still won plenty of games – the Browns would find NFL championship success once again in 1964 after blanking the Baltimore Colts in the league's biggest game. Cleveland piled up three more trips to the championship game over the next five seasons, but once the team merged into the American Football Conference in 1970, there simply wasn't as much success to be had.

The Browns did start to gain some momentum once again 10 years later when they went to battle with the Oakland Raiders, but unfortunately, the team was ousted in the divisional round. Cleveland would then find itself in three straight conference championship games, however, it was the super-talented Denver Broncos that would find a way to eliminate them each time.

Little did Browns fans know that 1989 would essentially be the peak of the team's success, with many surprising things to come down the road. After returning to the playoffs in 1994, it seemed as though the team might have some confidence going forward. Well, that was until owner Art Modell decided to relocate Cleveland's team to Baltimore, which caused the Baltimore Ravens to be born in 1996.

After three grueling years without football, Cleveland would see its lovable Browns return to the field with backing from the Lerner family. However, the Browns have been unable to replicate their early success since returning to action, with only two winning seasons since they made back into the NFL.

Cleveland Browns Marquee Players

The Browns obviously had some impressive talent early on in the franchise's history. There was quarterback Otto Graham who helped push the team forward during the early years and win all the AAFC titles. He would later make his way into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Of course, there was also fullback Jim Brown, who absolutely obliterated opposing defenses with his hard-nose running style. While Brown only played nine seasons for the Browns, he contributed more than most players could during a 20-year career. He was able to achieve a ridiculous amount of success and awards during his time in Cleveland, which no doubt has made him one of the greatest to ever play the game.

Other players such as Lou Groza, Paul Warfield, and Ozzie Newsome also made an incredible impact on the Cleveland franchise during their days in a Browns uniform.

Cleveland Browns Conference and Super Bowl Titles

Believe it or not, the Browns do in fact have a pretty awesome trophy case that is filled with plenty of league championships. Cleveland added four from the AAFC days and has also managed to pick up four during their time in the NFL, so the case is rather stocked.

The Browns do have 11 conference championships to their credit as well, with the most recent one coming all the way back in 1969.

As for divisional crowns, the Browns haven't been strangers to those either, with 12 total championships in that category.

Cleveland's last title of any sort happened way back in 1989 when they were able to conquer the AFC Central division with a solid regular season.

Cleveland Browns Venue Information

Cleveland Municipal Stadium played home to the Browns for almost 50 years before the franchise made its move into the brand spanking new Cleveland Browns Stadium for their return to the NFL back in 1999.

The name managed to hold until 2013 when – to go along with the professional sports trend of naming a stadium after a business - the venue was changed to FirstEnergy Stadium.

Just over 67,400 people are able to visit the stadium for Browns home games and new upgrades and features certainly make it a worthwhile experience for those that are looking to enter the Dawg Pound, which is the rowdiest section in the stadium that includes the team's most dedicated fans.

Cleveland Browns 2014 Season Recap

After drafting the wildly popular Johnny Manziel in the 2014 NFL draft, there seemed to be a lot of hope in the air for the Browns when the 2014 season got underway. It had been a long time since the city had experienced that in the world of football.

And things looked even better after a 7-4 start made it seem as though Cleveland's playoff drought would finally end. With 11 straight seasons without a sniff of the playoffs, Browns fans just knew that this had to be the year that streak was broken.

But unfortunately, after an absolutely miserable stretch in late November and December, that didn't exactly happen. The Browns were on the wrong side of the win/loss column in their final five games of the season, giving the team another losing season on their resume and fans feeling the disappointment of another wasted regular season campaign.

The Johnny Manziel experiment was also a monumental failure in his first season on the roster, as not only was Manziel ineffective when he made his way onto the field, but he also did a lot of partying off the field which eventually led to him entering rehab.
