Since its founding in 1999 by Paul Tollett, Coachella has grown significantly to become one of the most popular music and arts festivals around the world. The festival is located in Indio, California in the Coachella Valley of the Colorado Desert. The annual event covers over 600 acres of the Empire Polo Club grounds. Coachella headliners cover many genres of music such as indie, rap, pop, rock, EDM, and others. Another factor making Coachella unique from other music festivals is the art showcased during the event. Art pieces are visual and interactive, with each year’s artists outdoing the previous year. These factors and more make Coachella unique and have helped build Coachella exponentially since its humble beginnings.
Although the festival was officially founded in 1999, the earliest version of Coachella began in 1993 when Pearl Jam performed at the Empire Polo Club. While Pearl Jam would typically perform in Los Angeles, due to a dispute with Ticketmaster, the band chose the Indio California location. Paul Tollett was working for Goldenvoice at the time and booked the location for the band. It was then he realized the potential the Empire Polo Club grounds had in hosting large scale events.
In 1997 when Goldenvoice was struggling financially against larger scale firms, Tollett attended the Glastonbury Festival and began to brainstorm ideas for a festival of his own. Unlike other music festivals at the time, Tollett wanted a design with multiple venues and stages, with artists that weren’t chart toppers but were still trendy. Tollett and Goldenvoice VP Rick Van Stanten booked the Empire Polo Club and set the first annual Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival for October 9-10. Tickets went on sale only a week after Woodstock 1999, which tainted the image of music festivals due to the amount of violence that took place at the festival. Tollett revamped the marketing of the event boasting free water fountains, misting tents, and ample restrooms.
Beck, the Chemical Brothers, Tool, Morrissey, and Rage Against the Machine headlined the first Coachella festival, which strived to emulate European music festivals based around small crowds and performers chosen based on artistry over radio popularity. Although attendance was much lower than anticipated, the event was well-regarded among critics and attendees. After the first year, Coachella earned the title of “the anti-Woodstock” because of its well-behaved crowd and artist choice.
Although the first year was mildly successful, Tollett was forced to cancel the event in 2000 due to low ticket sales, which he blamed the oversaturation of music festivals in the area for. Despite financial concerns, Tollett and Goldenvoice (which was sold to AEG earlier that year) revamped the festival for 2001. Because of a lack of available artists and money, the festival was shortened to a single day and the company took a loss again. Despite this, Tollett was determined to make Coachella successful. In 2002 the festival reverted to its original 2-day format and due to strong supporting acts, Oasis and Bjőrk, Goldenvoice and Tollett finally broke even.
Coachella experienced growth and gained traction from 2003 to 2005 with headliners Iggy Pop, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Coldplay, Snow Patrol, M.I.A., The Beastie Boys, and other popular names drawing in new crowds from across the country. In 2007 Goldenvoice inaugurated the Stagecoach Festival, an annual country music festival, which diverted some of the organizational complications of Coachella and bringing in additional revenue and positive press for the club. The Empire Polo Club finally signed long-term lease with Goldenvoice.
Since then the festival has grown exponentially, expanded to three days, and features headliners such as Paul McCartney, The Killers, Jack Johnson, Prince, Kings of Leon, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Kanye West, and Mumford & Sons, among others. Tollett did away with single day tickets, selling only 3-day passes. In 2012, due to the festival’s success and popularity, Coachella organizers announced that they would expand to a separately-ticketed second weekend, with an identical lineup. Although Rolling Stone and other critics believed it was an extremely risky move believing there wouldn’t be enough demand, tickets sold out in less than 3 hours.
In 2013 it was announced that the Empire Polo Club and Goldenvoice had reached an agreement to hold the festival there through the year 2030. In 2015 with headliners Outkast, Muse, and Arcade Fire, supported by Zedd, MGMT, Bastille, ACDC, Drake, Jay-Z, Diplo, and surprise performances by Beyonce and Madonna, tickets sold out in less than 20 minutes.
Despite the obstacles during its early years, Coachella is now breaking records with the popularity of the festival. The 2016 lineup boasts the reunions of Guns N’ Roses and Soundsystem, along with Calvin Harris, Ellie Goulding, Ice Cube, Disclosure, and others. Coachella is now considered a trendsetter for both music and fashion, dictating what and who is popular in the music industry for the year. Coachella is now the most popular music festival in the United States, providing attendees with memories that will last a lifetime.
