Colorado Avalanche Overview
Colorado Avalanche Franchise HistoryIt's been quite a while since the franchise now known as the Colorado Avalanche took its first steps onto the slippery ice of a professional hockey rink. The Avalanche did just that in 1972, but it was under a much different name. The Quebec Nordiques were the ones that kicked off this franchise with a bang by skating their way into the World Hockey Association. The club actually won a championship in 1977 and then the Nordiques moved their way into the NHL world.
Quebec did have trouble making the league adjustment, as it cruised to seven playoff appearances in their first eight tries in the league. The Nordiques did manage two Wales Conference Final attempts during that time, but anything further than that just wasn't meant to be for Quebec. But then some mighty struggles set in with the Quebec squad only finding the playoffs twice during the eight-year stretch prior to their southward move to Colorado.
But once the Avalanche were born, they shook the whole entire landscape of the hockey world. How did Colorado do that? By dominating the Stanley Cup Final in their first year of play. Perhaps it was the cool colors and jerseys that allowed the Avalanche to run through the post-season and take the brooms to the Florida Panthers in the biggest hockey series in the world. Clearly this Colorado squad was on a mission to do big things.
In fact, 10 straight years in the playoffs was what the Avalanche managed to accomplish, which is quite the feat. After three Conference Finals failures for Colorado during the mid to late 90s, the Avalanche returned to claim their Stanley Cup throne in 2001 after winning a dramatic seven-game set against the New Jersey Devils. After tallying 118 points in the regular season, it was a welcoming sight for Avalanche fans.
However, unfortunately for those same Avalanche supporters, recent history hasn't offered up the same type of glory. After a whopping eight straight divisional crowns to start the Colorado campaign, this squad has won only a single one in 11 tries. And not even a Conference Finals appearance has come to the Avalanche since all the way back in 2002. It's certainly been a tale of two eras for the hockey team that calls Colorado home and fans have to be hoping that the momentum shifts for the Avalanche sooner rather than later.
Colorado Avalanche Marquee PlayersThe Avalanche franchise has retired five jerseys thus far, with those awesome players being a huge part of Colorado's success throughout the years. Names like Ray Bourque, Peter Forsberg, Patrick Roy, Adam Foote, and Joe Sakic no doubt ring a bell to hockey fans that saw the Avalanche do their thing and win a whole lot of significant games in the process.
The latter of that simply phenomenal group of talents had a stellar Colorado hockey career and is tops in scoring points, goals, and total assists for the club. There's no doubt that Sakic was an absolute game-changer on the ice for this furious Avalanche franchise over the years and that he'll continue to be one of the best hockey players in recent memory.
And it goes without saying how phenomenal of a goaltender that Roy was in his prime, as Colorado wouldn't have been able to achieve such great heights without him in the mask putting fear in the hearts of his NHL scoring opposition.
Colorado Avalanche Conference and Stanley Cup TitlesThere's just something about the number two for the Avalanche squad when it comes to titles and trophies. Make it two Stanley Cup titles for Colorado since the move, which has obviously also equaled two conference championships to go along with it.
The number two does not apply to Avalanche divisional crowns, as instead, Colorado has amassed a nice nine total for that category.
Of course, winning eight straight to start your new Avalanche franchise will certainly help that number quite a bit. But unfortunately, the Colorado franchise hasn't found anywhere near as much success in that department since the new decade began, leaving Avalanche supporter to wonder if they'll ever be participating in a championship parade in Denver ever again.
Colorado Avalanche Venue InformationThe Pepsi Center has a refreshing ring to it, and it's no wonder that the Avalanche have excelled at the awesome arena since 1999. Before that came along, it was McNichols Sports Arena was the venue of choice for Colorado's finest hockey squad.
The venue also houses the NBA'sDenver Nuggets, and of course, when the Avalanche aren't skating around making history, the arena is a fantastic choice to catch a cool concert.
Just over 18,000 rowdy hockey crazy patrons can rush into the Pepsi Center to check out the Avalanche take care of business, and these Colorado fans are without question some of the best that the NHL has to offer.
Colorado Avalanche 2014-2015 Season RecapAfter all the talk about the Avalanche's struggles to make it back to Stanley Cup glory, some wondered if this may be the campaign that sent Colorado back in the right direction.
Well, a last place divisional finish for the Avalanche answered that question pretty emphatically, as the Colorado squad could do absolutely zip with its season. Offer the Western Conference Central division credit for being strong – and the Avalanche did in fact win more games than they lost en route to 90 points – but it just wasn't enough to give Colorado playoff hockey once again.
The Avalanche had finally made the long trek back to the post-season after missing it three years straight, but coming up short during the new campaign likely hurt Colorado's momentum going forward.
It's hard to achieve hockey success when your power play is non-existent, and the Avalanche were putrid at only connecting on 15 percent of their opportunities throughout the grueling NHL campaign.
Colorado will definitely need to re-focus and try to get some playoff hockey going once so that the Avalanche can accomplish big things in the future.
