Columbus Blue Jackets Overview

Columbus Blue Jackets Franchise History

The Columbus Blue Jackets are fresh onto the professional hockey scene having only been in the mix since 2000. Because of that, the Blue Jackets don't exactly have a ton of experience to speak of when it comes to making waves in the hockey world.

It doesn't surprise many hockey fans when a team finishes dead last during its inaugural campaign, but luckily Columbus avoided that by picking up a somewhat impressive 71 points during their first year on the circuit. Did that send the Blue Jackets to the playoffs? Of course not, but 28 wins is nothing to scoff at when you're competing in the toughest hockey league in the world. That made it appear that Columbus would at least have a chance to make some strides early on.

The Blue Jackets would go backwards the next year and only muster 57 points, giving Columbus the not so brilliant achievement of finishing at the bottom of the conference. In 2002, Columbus would at least get moving in the right direction once again, and the Blue Jackets would soar to a franchise record 74 points in 2006. They'd break the record two years later by reaching 80 points, and then Blue Jackets would finally stumble upon the playoffs after a whopping 92-point regular season.

Columbus went in as the seventh-seed in a loaded Western Conference and got the opportunity to go toe-to-toe with Hockeytown's very own Detroit Red Wings. Not many people gave the Blue Jackets a chance in that round, and rightfully so since Detroit did easily sweep Columbus right out of their first post-season appearance. The Blue Jackets still clearly had a lot of catching up to do with the NHL's greatest franchises.

The franchise would head in the opposite direction after that, with the Blue Jackets only being able to muster up a 13th-15th place finish in the conference. However, the Columbus fans would be treated to playoff hockey once again in 2014 after the Blue Jackets made the switch to the newly-designed Metropolitan Conference. Hey, at least Columbus would win two games, but the result stayed the same in that the Blue Jackets could not advance beyond the Conference Quarterfinals.

Columbus Blue Jackets Marquee Players

With the Blue Jackets being in existence for such a short amount of time, obviously Columbus has been able to produce any Hall of Fame talents just yet.

But that hasn't stopped the Blue Jackets from filling the roster with great talents that certainly made an impact on this lovable Columbus franchise. Take Rick Nash, for example, who was the first selection by the team all the way back in 2002, and he definitely went on to prove his worth for the club.

In 10 years in Columbus, Nash was able to become the squad's leading points scorer and pretty much the leader in everything else since he joined on with the Blue Jackets in the younger days of the franchise. It will probably take a while for any other Columbus player to have the same type of impact that he had on the Blue Jackets organization.

Fedor Tyutin is trying to make his run up the all-time scoring board at the moment, but with only 182 right now, he still has a ways to go before he can catch the incomparable Nash on the Blue Jackets leaderboard. Will he do it? It's certainly possible given his high level of play.

Columbus Blue Jackets Conference and Stanley Cup Titles

Well, I think most Blue Jackets and NHL fans know where this one is heading. The Columbus hockey team has only appeared in the NHL post-season twice now, so racking up an exquisite conference title or a prestigious Stanley Cup trophy is obviously kind of slim.

The Blue Jackets haven't secured any championships, whether that be a divisional, conference, or world, and that certainly has to be Columbus' motivation going forward if it ever wants to become one of the NHL's elite franchises.

Columbus Blue Jackets Venue Information

The Nationwide Arena was the house that the Blue Jackets built. Well, the Columbus players themselves didn't actually construct the arena itself, but you get the point. The venue was created for the sole purpose of hosting all Blue Jackets home games, and they've done their damage on the ice there ever since the team's inception.

While the city has tried to bring an NBA team to Columbus the Blue Jackets are still the only pro show in town right now. Around 18,500 people can make their way to the confines to take in a Columbus home game, giving the Blue Jacket faithful a raucous atmosphere when the visitors take the ice.

The location of the Nationwide Arena is rather great as well, with plenty of exciting places that Blue Jackets fans or even opposing fans can visit when they take in a game at the venue.

Perhaps the most interesting nugget about the Nationwide Arena's location is that is built directly in the spot of where the Ohio Penitentiary use to stand.

Columbus Blue Jackets 2014-2015 Season Recap

A playoff entry for the Blue Jackets in 2014 had to mean good things for the franchise going forward, right? That's what the Columbus faithful was hoping for as its favorite team entered the 2014-2015 campaign.

All in all, the Blue Jackets only came up a few points short of their previous campaign numbers, but the difference was that Columbus finished 11th in the conference instead of seventh. No playoff appearance again for the Blue Jackets this year? You bet.

But don't discount the fact that the Blue Jackets fought to try and gain a spot. The Blue Jackets were ridiculously impressive by going 9-0-1 in its final 10 matchups on the ice, so Columbus did all it could do to make an outstanding push towards getting another playoff appearance under their belt.

Nick Foligno had a great year scoring-wise, and Ryan Johansen was right behind him with just two points less. But once again, the Blue Jackets in the playoffs just weren't meant to be in Columbus.
