Dallas Stars Overview

Dallas Stars Franchise History

The stars aligned (pun intended) for the Dallas Stars to skate their way onto the professional hockey circuit all the way back in 1967. Of course, way before the Stars made their way to the Dallas, the organization was labeled under another name: Minnesota North Stars. This was where the rink magic began for the Stars squad, and the first ice campaign saw playoff persistence with Minnesota scooting into the semi-final round before St. Louis ousted the North Stars.

Minnesota would continue to find success under the North Stars moniker for quite a while during their 26-year period in the city, as the franchise never went more than three campaigns without finding their way into the playoff hockey atmosphere. Of course the two biggest highlights during the North Stars year dealt with Stanley Cup appearances that conveniently came 10 years apart from each other.

It was 1981 that brought about the initial burst onto the championship scene for the North Stars, with the team rolling through Boston, Buffalo, and Calgary to meet up with the New York Islanders in hopes of reaching Stanley Cup glory. That didn't happen for Minnesota thanks to a great series from the New York squad, but it was a leap forward for the North Stars in gaining the experience. It would then be 10 years later when the North Stars rushed back into hockey's most elite series, as it would be the Pittsburgh Penguins that would be between Minnesota and Stanley Cup triumph. The series once again didn't go in the North Stars' favor and two years later, the club would call Dallas its home.

Aside from a small bump in the road during the 1995-1996 season, the playoffs would be in sight for the new Stars in seven of the first eight years in the city. However, it would be the year 1999 that the Stars would cement themselves in hockey history by being labeled a championship franchise. After dominating their way through the Western Conference, Dallas achieved Stanley Cup triumph by downing the Buffalo Sabres in a heated six game set. Stars supporters wouldn't have to wait long to have another crack at a title, with Dallas returning to Stanley Cup land to defend their crown the next year. But this time around, the pesky New Jersey Devils would take the title away from the Stars.

Unfortunately for Stars fans with championship aspirations, the club hasn't been able to make its glorious return to hockey's biggest stage since 2000. Sure, the playoffs have come around quite a bit for Dallas and there's been a Conference Finals appearance in the mix. But once the Stars won the fantastic crown, they just haven't made those same advances ever since.

Dallas Stars Marquee Players

Four numbers of Stars players have been held in high esteem by the club, as they have been retired by the organization. Bill Masteron became the first thanks to his outstanding days in Minnesota, and Mike Modano has been the most recent number retiree after starting his career with the North Stars and then ditching the north for the south and remaining a Stars regular.

Four Stars players have also earned hockey's highest mark as Hall of Fame members, with the great Modano also being a part of that prestigious group.

That makes sense since Modano has compiled quite the resume as Dallas' leading scorer, points man, and assists guru during his time with the franchise.

Dallas Stars Conference and Stanley Cup Titles

Everything still points back to that unique 1998-1998 Stars campaign that resulted in Stanley Cup glory for the first time. Well, it's the only instance the Stars have achieved that to this point, but it paved the way towards this franchise being elite.

The club has added two conference crowns to its credit over the years – coming in those back-to-back Stanley Cup appearance years – which is still better than most hockey clubs achieve on a regular basis.

The Stars have also amassed seven divisional titles throughout their history, with all of those coming in the post-Minnesota move years in Dallas.

Dallas Stars Venue Information

The Minnesota edition of the Stars did their damage at the Met Center, but these days, the Dallas squad is doing its work at the American Airlines Center.

The Stars got their Dallas start at Reunion Arena before making the move to the impressive place that they now call their hockey home. Of course, the Stars aren't the only show in town with the Dallas Mavericks also using the American Airlines Center during hoops season.

There has been a ridiculous amount of awesome events at the arena throughout the years, and over 19,000 excited Stars supporters can see the time play live. The city of Dallas also has plenty to offer Stars fans that are looking for things to do around the fun town as well.

Dallas Stars 2014-2015 Season Recap

Perhaps the 2014-2015 campaign would be the driving force that the Stars needed to make their return to the Stanley Cup Finals a good one. Or at least that's what Stars fans were hoping for when Dallas skated onto the ice for the fresh new start of this season.

Instead, the Stars were unable to reach that mark they were hoping for since they weren't even able to make it to the actual hockey playoffs themselves either. Dallas was only able to muster up a sixth place finish its own Central division, much less make a valiant effort at a playoff push.

Unfortunately the result was not welcoming after the Stars made their first playoff round in six years during the 2014 campaign, so Dallas went heading in the completely wrong direction once again.

For a Stars franchise that has shown so much promise over the organization's history, you would think Dallas would be able to turn it around rather quickly and find playoff success once again. But Stars fans can tell you that all signs point towards that not happening in the near future.
