Denver Broncos Overview

Denver Broncos Franchise History

It was all the way back in 1960 that the Mile High City's favorite football team – the Denver Broncos – took the field for the first time. The Broncos roared into the American Football League to start things off before eventually stepping their way into the National Football League. And guess what? The successful Broncos squads that most of us know today were nowhere to be found during Denver's early years on the gridiron.

The Broncos had a pitiful beginning to their organization after Denver mustered four victories during the inaugural campaign. Would things take an upward trend for the Broncos after that? Not at all. Only three wins could come to the Mile High City during the next season, but luckily the Broncos picked up the pace with a nice 7-7 record the year after that. That season for Denver would be quite the outlier, as the Broncos were awful at times after turning things around.

Denver got absolutely nowhere the next 10 seasons, somehow managing a losing campaign in every single one of them. In fact, five wins would be the highest that the Broncos would see during any of those putrid years. Then came a nice resurgence for the organization in 1973 when the Broncos landed their first winning record in franchise history. Denver fans had to be excited that they followed it up with another winning year, and the horses were off and running in the Mile High City following that.

The Broncos got their first sweet taste of true success on the gridiron in 1977 when they marched through the competition to make the Super Bowl against a ridiculously good Dallas Cowboys squad. The result turned out in Dallas' favor, but at least Denver proved that it could indeed be a title contender after so many failed seasons.

Four more post-season looks would come to the Broncos after the Super Bowl struggles before they returned to the NFL's premier game in 1986. The New York Giants stopped the momentum this time around, and the next season it would be the Washington Redskins that gave the Broncos fits in another Super Bowl failure. Perhaps the NFC East monkey was placed right on the backs of the Denver franchise since they couldn't rise to the occasion against any of those organizations.

The 49ers would be the next team to deliver yet another Super Bowl loss to the Broncos in 1989, which had many Denver fans wondering if their club would ever get over the hump. It would be until 1997 before that question would receive a triumphant answer, as the Broncos finally made the Super Bowl count and came up with a world championship in sneaking past the Green Bay Packers. Not long after that – the following year actually – the Broncos kept the confidence rolling by winning another world title with a two-touchdown shellacking of the Atlanta Falcons.

Denver's next trip the Super Bowl? Well, it would have to be patient until 2013 when they squared off with the Seattle Seahawks. The result was not pretty for Broncos fans, with the franchise being bounced 43-8 in that game.

Denver Broncos Marquee Players

There's no doubt that Peyton Manning is currently the most recognizable superstar for the Broncos, but before the Tennessee great came along, there was John Elway.

Elway was masterful in aiding Denver's two Super Bowl victories during his career, and he'll undoubtedly be considered one of the best signal callers to ever step under center. He also had superb talents like Shannon Sharpe and Terrell Davis finding the end zone on a regular basis.

Two other Bronco greats – Frank Tripucka and Floyd Little – have had their memorable numbers retired by the franchise.

Denver Broncos Conference and Super Bowl Titles

Without Elway, the current number of Super Bowl titles in the wonderful city of Denver would be zero. Luckily, the Broncos had Elway, and that's why the number is at two for the team's history, which is obviously still better than zero despite the team having number opportunities to get more under their belt.

Denver has no shortage of conference titles to its credit though, with an awesome seven in that category. Plus the franchise has accumulated an incredible 14 divisional championships, leaving many fans wishing they could have turned those into more Super Bowl successes.

Denver Broncos Venue Information

Mile High Stadium will be the most recognizable name for non-Broncos fans to associate with the team's stadium because of the wildly memorable moments that occurred there, but in 2001, Denver made its move to a new venue.

Of course, that was just the first Mile High Stadium. While the new Sports Authority Field at Mile High label is accurate, most still associate the venue with its former name and more or less look at it as a second edition of sorts.

Over 76,000 people can scream as loudly as they want when the Broncos step foot on the grass, making it one of the best overall atmospheres that the league has to offer.

Denver Broncos 2014 Season Recap

Wiping away the awful taste of a 43-8 Super Bowl debacle isn't easy to do. That's what the Broncos set out to try and accomplish with the 2014 campaign, and as far as the regular season went, they had no trouble doing that in piling up 12 nice victories.

The playoff performance, however, was a bit of a different story for Denver's gridiron greats. Most though the Broncos would cruise right on through to meet Tom Brady's Patriots, but someone forgot to remind Denver that the Indianapolis Colts were no joke.

Peyton Manning's former team came back to haunt him and won convincingly in the Mile High City to ruin the Broncos' chances of making up for their Super Bowl gaffe the year prior.

A coaching change for the Broncos following the season should bring about plenty of question marks for the franchise going forward with an aging Peyton Manning likely in his final seasons under center.
