Detroit Lions Overview

Detroit Lions Franchise History

The Detroit Lions brought the Motor City the sport of football all the way back in 1934. But before that, the franchise was the Portsmouth Spartans. The Spartans struggled in their first year on the gridiron, but luckily the league wasn't holding playoffs at the time so they didn't miss anything special. Portsmouth would find its way into the inaugural set of playoffs in 1932 where the Chicago Bears blanked the team's gridiron greats.

Two years later saw the Lions take the field for the first time, and it wasn't long before Detroit was nearing its first NFL title. The championship trophy was hoisted in the Motor City in 1935 after the Lions wiped the field with the talented New York Giants. Unfortunately, it would be a long wait for Lions supporters for the next playoff appearance to come around, as Detroit vanished from the post-season for 17 years after experiencing the thrill of championship glory.

But when the Lions returned to the playoffs, they certainly made it worth it by bringing home back-to-back NFL titles in 1952 and 1953. The Lions fought their hardest to get some three-peat action going, however, the Cleveland Browns absolutely obliterated them in the title game the following year. Detroit would plot its revenge for a few years and then return the favor to the Browns in the 1957 championship matchup by destroying Cleveland by 45 points.

Little did Lions fans know that they would desperately need to cling to that title. 12 years would pass before Detroit would find itself striving for a championship triumph, but the Lions came up a bit short in 1970 after losing a 5-0 decision to the Cowboys. Then the franchise wouldn't return to the post-season until 1982 where the Redskins made quick work of that particular Lions bunch.

However, it wouldn't be until the early 90s that Detroit would become a playoff regular. A conference title loss to those same Redskins would be extremely disappointing in 1991, but then 1993 would give Detroit another opportunity to make up for it. That didn't happen though thanks to a Wild Card ousting from the Packers. A year later, it was another Wild Card elimination at the hands of the cheeseheads. The trend would continue of Wild Card goodbyes as the Lions would go on lose three more playoff decisions in a five season span.

Detroit hasn't been able to make a playoff splash or come anywhere close to chasing down a world championship recently either, with the Lions only scooting into the playoffs twice since the turn of the century.

Detroit Lions Marquee Players

Six players have found themselves with the honor of having their Lions number retired by the organization, and the player that most fans would know from that list is the phenomenal Barry Sanders.

The man ran his way into the Hall of Fame for a reason, as he is without question one of the most exciting rushers to ever hit the football field. He was the main reason why the Lions were able to become playoff regulars in the 90s, and although Detroit didn't achieve any significant playoff success, Sanders was still a force to be reckoned with.

Other Lions greats include Doak Walker and Joe Schmidt, who have both also earned the retired number distinction as well in Detroit.

Detroit Lions Conference and Super Bowl Titles

Contrary to popular belief, the Lions do have championships in their trophy case. Yes, all four major championships came before the AFL-NFL merger, but hey, titles are titles for Detroit.

The No. 4 is a common theme for the Lions in terms of titles, as the team also has four conference titles and four divisional crowns to add to their resume.

Of course, Detroit fans are just wishing that this Lions franchise would start adding a whole lot more of those soon rather than continuing their unfortunate championship drought.

Detroit Lions Venue Information

These days it is Ford Field that houses the ferocious Lions franchise, and before that, it was the Pontiac Silverdome that did that job.

But Ford Field has become a sports mecca in terms of all the huge events that are held there on a regular basis each year., whether that be in the world of sports or from the musical ranks. The Lions are the only show in town when it comes to a regular sports team at the venue, however, plenty of incredible tournaments and concerts have graced the Ford Field venue over the years.

Over 65,000 loud and proud Lions fans can cause a stir at homes, which certainly gives this franchise a nice home field advantage in that regard.

The stadium itself is just massive and there's so many reasons why Lions supporters should do their best to make it to a home game at some point during the season.

Detroit Lions 2014 Season Recap

The Lions finally found a way to participate in the playoffs once again in 2011 after a 12-year absence from the NFL's biggest stage. But after two more years with no post-season in sight, Detroit fans were hoping that the team would find a way back to the stage.

Matthew Stafford and company did just that after winning an incredible 11 games during the campaign, which set the Lions up with a showdown against the surging Dallas Cowboys. After questionable officiating came into play, Detroit did not have enough to overcome the boys from the Big D, giving the Lions another frustrating playoff exit.

But considering the amount of talent that the Lions currently have on their roster – and with the nucleus of Stafford and megastar Calvin Johnson intact – Detroit should be just fine, and hopefully for its fans, will be able to make regular playoff appearances going forward.

It's been quite a while since the Lions were in this good of shape roster-wise, and there's no doubt that the franchise is hoping that the regular season success will translate into post-season success very soon.
